Federation of Islamic Medical Association (FIMA) Press Release

Media reports confirm a US military airstrike on a Medecins Sans Frontieres (MSF Doctors Without Borders) hospital in Kunduz, Afghanistan, early this morning killing 9 and injuring 37 health professionals including 4 doctors.

All medical personnel whether military or civilian are protected from armed conflict by the Geneva Convention and its protocols. Any deliberate violation of this law constitutes a war crime in terms of the International Criminal Court.

FIMA unequivocally condemns this deliberate act of aggression on the unarmed medical personnel and hospital administration of the MSF hospital in Kunduz, Afghanistan and supports the call for an international-led investigation.

In the words of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) “such attacks undermine the authority of humanitarian organizations to assist the Afghan people at a time when they most urgently need it”.

Dr Tanveer Zubairi (Pakistan)
President FIMA

Dr Ashraf Jedaar (South Africa)

Dato' Dr Musa Mohd Nordin (Malaysia)
