President's Message October 2011

FIMA held its 28th Annual Council Meeting in jakarta, Indonesia from September 13-18th, 2011. A large number of delegates from 21 countries attended the meeting. The host Indonesian Islamic Medical Association and YARSI University held a two days scientific convention followiing FIMA meeting. The theme was "Geriatrics - in the paradigm of Islam".

FIMA Lifetime Achievement Award of 2012 was presented to Dr. Mohammad Khan during the opening ceremony.

It was indeed a mega task for the IIMA and YARSI University, under the able leadership of Dr. Jurnalis Uddin and his dedicated and professional team who assisted the FIMA delegates in travel and accomodation arrangements, in addition to organizing their own scientific convention.

We are all very grateful to IIMA and all those from YARSI University for their warm hospitality and commitment. On behalf of FIMA Council I congratulate the IMAs of Nigeria and Thailand for admission to the FIMA full membership. We also congratulate IMA of Mauritania for becoming associate FIMA member. The current membership of FIMA now stands 27 active IMA's and 13 associate members worldwide.

Member IMA's presented their annual reports to the council with synopsis of their activities, dominated by the philanthropic activities of medical relief work during disasters and peace. FIMA Save Vision reported to have completed 62,000 cataract surgeries.

FIMA Save Smile, FIMA Save Dignity, and FIMA Mobile Mother and Child Health Services were also introduced to the world body. IMANA Relief in collaboration with FIMA and Islamic Relief of USA did an incredible job during the recent initiation of FIMA-IMANA-IR Somalis Medical Relief project for the famine and drough hit Somali population which is stranded in the IDPs and regurees camps outnumbering the estimates.

It has been around two years since FIMA launched its e-Newsletter. It has proven to be a great tool for networking and communication. I encourage all IMAs to continue sending news of their activities to share with the global community of IMAs.

The next semi annual EXCO meeting will be held on 10-11th March 2012 in Istanbul and will be hosted by Hayat Foundation, Turkey. I invite your suggestions to improve the working of FIMA, especially as the EXCO shall deliberate on the topics of FIMA Consultative Council and amendments to the FIMA constitution.
