After 31 days of unrelenting bombardment of the Gaza Strip by Israeli
Defence Forces, the region was left with unprecedented destruction and suffering
in the region. This has resulted in the death of 10,328 and more than 26,000
severely injured. This includes the death of 4237 children, 2719 women, and 631 elderly
persons, which constitutes 70% of total deaths.
The massive destruction of the infrastructure of the peninsula includes
electricity power stations, water refineries and desalination plants, bakeries and
food warehouses. The wanton targeting of the health structure including 113
health facilities and 192 health professionals with 18 hospitals, 40 primary health
centres and 31 ambulances were destroyed or left dysfunctional.
The total blockage of medicines, food, water and fuel has further
aggravated the suffering of the already impoverished and largely displaced
population. An estimated 1.4 million persons are displaced from their homes
destroyed in the bombing with 630,000 sheltered in UNWRA facilities, 120,000 in
hospitals, churches, and other public buildings, and 80,000 in non-UNWRA schools.
Despite these difficult and dangerous conditions, FIMA and its associates
in Viva Palestina Malaysia and Alkhidmat Foundation, have been very active in this
period distributing food, water, health kits, shelter, and other emergency supplies.
Al Khidmat and the Jordanian army are ready to establish fully equipped field
hospitals at the border crossing in Egypt. Other IMAs including IMANA are ready
and waiting at the border crossing to assist and support their colleagues in the
beleaguered hospitals in Gaza.
