Dear Brothers and Sisters

Assalamu Alaikum!

The military conflict for control of Libya continues unabated with daily casualties added to the health burden of the region. As many as 10,000 civilians are feared dead with many more severely injured. The remaining hospitals, not destroyed or damaged in the bombings on both the Eastern and Western regions, are struggling if not already crippled by this daily influx of serious and often complicated injuries. These hospitals are compromised by the following challenges:

· Desertion of medical staff including nursing

· Medical and surgical consumables have been exhausted

· Medical equipment and instruments need replacing or upgrading

· No relief for remaining health professionals working under appalling conditions

Our local partners in the region, Arab Medical Union (AMU) in collaboration with IMA Egypt have performed courageously under extreme and dangerous conditions providing humanitarian relief and health care to the displaced populations on the respective borders as well as the injured fleeing the troubled region or support for their colleagues in Libya. Prof Aly Mishal, FIMA Executive Director, recently visited the region and met with the various role players. They propose continuing this noble work in the following projects:

1. Libyan casualties treated in Egyptian hospitals: these casualties are often very serious and complicated requiring specialist care and supervision. AMU has sponsored the treatment of 50 injured Libyans at an estimated cost of 260,000 USD.

2. Medications for the local population inside Libya who suffer from chronic illnesses (heart conditions, hypertension, diabetes and other chronic illness). Medications for such conditions have been exhausted and will cost  1,100,000 USD to replace.

3. Care of Libyan casualties inside Libya:

a. Eastern provinces, near the Egyptian borders: medical teams, transport, consumables, instruments and medications will cost approx. 450,000 USD

b. Western provinces, Misurata and the regions near the Tunisians borders: estimated cost  of 75,000 USD.

4. Sending medical teams (doctors, nurses and technicians) to work in Libyan hospitals, which are suffering from continuous desertion of medical manpower. Estimated cost 373,000 USD.

Dear FIMA members, we are morally and ethically obliged to assist our brothers working in these regions. We can assist in any of the following manners:

· Collecting and transporting medicines, supplies, consumables and instruments to the region

· Organizing specialist surgical medical missions to assist our colleagues in the various parts of the troubled region

· Starting a collection drive to assist our brothers financially in containing and covering these costs, an estimated 2,500,000USD is urgently required!

FIMA and member IMAs and collaborating relief NGOs are called upon to collaborate and compliment AMU efforts in these ongoing projects:

  • Medical manpower could be delegated for various periods. AMU is ready to receive these missions and provide logistic support
  • Sending donations for any of the 4 projects: This could be done by sending your contributions to the following AMU Account:

Beneficiary: Arab Medical Union

Bank: FAISAL BANK- 26 July Branch

Account number: 212051

A combined relief committee has been formed, composed of reps of AMU and IMA-Egypt. Please contact either of them directly or myself for any information, coordination or any other support:
