REPORT FROM JORDAN ON PALESTINIAN RELIEF
I have attempted a summary of our humanitarian and medical work in the realm of Palestinian Relief over the past several months :

1. A working medical group was established locally in Jordan. Participants are: FIMA, The Jordan Medical Association and The Jordan Private Hospitals Association.
   We are trying to establish some integration and cooperation with local and international organizations, namely :
   • The Islamic International Council for Da’wa and Relief (IICDR).
   • The Jordan Hashemite Charitable Organization.
   • The Organization of Islamic Conference (OIC).
   • The Arab Medical Union.
   • WHO


2. Up to date, we have received more than 900 Palestinian patients, referred from official Palestinian authorities. All were admitted to Private Jordanian hospitals with difficult and complicated major medical or surgical conditions that are impossible to be dealt with inside Palestine, due to the lack of qualified specialists and serious scarcity of medical equipments and supplies. Such conditions include major cardiovascular, neurosurgical, eye, cancer and violence-related injuries. We receive an average of 70 patients per month.
3. The expenses of treatment so far have exceeded two million USD. Donations received so far are less than 200.000 USD. Prominent among our supporters are: Mercy Malaysia and Doctors Worldwide.
4. The Jordan private hospitals granted significant cuts on the bills of medical care. Doctors were requested to waive their fees totally or partially. So far, Hospitals were kind enough to wait until donations are available to cover these medical expenses.
5. Another area of action is the help of Palestinian new graduate doctors to acquire residency training outside Palestine. This activity is crucial to provide Palestinian institutions and communities with qualified doctors in various specialties.

Thank you for your continued interest to provide humanitarian medical help to impoverished Palestinian patients deprived of qualified care in their homeland. I agree with your kind suggestion to heighten efforts to shed light on their continuous sufferings, the cruel racial aggression against them, and the real need to provide expert medical care to alleviate their sufferings.

May Allah (SWT) bless all the dedicated people who have extended any form of humanitarian assistance and sincere Dua for the suffering of mankind in various regions in this troubled world.

1. LETTER FROM JORDAN
Dear Br. Dr. Intizar
Assalamu Alaikum

Two of our ophthalmologists have returned back after 3 weeks of ophthalmology training in Lahore, under the capable hands of yourself and your colleagues. We are waiting for the third ophthalmologist who was delegated from Palestine. The fourth one is from Sudan.

We can not express our heartfelt gratitude and thanks, because words are unable to do so. Suffice to quote here what one of our ophthalmologists wrote in the report he presented to us; ~In my whole life I have never encountered such a sincere warm reception and hospitality! I felt I am among people who do not work for this world, but for the hereafter! They have the sincere and dedicated spirit of our Deen, that most of us who read Qura’n in Arabic, fail to manifest! They are extremely hospitable to their guest, they fulfill what they say, they experience no fatigue, they share with others their wealth, experience and even homes, and they expect nothing in return, except the pleasure and blessing of their Creator .."

This is just one portion of the report!

I cannot add more, except to say that with this spirit and sincerity, our work will Insha Allah raise to levels that fulfill our aims in all aspects of life.

1. REPORT FROM SOMALIA
Kindest regards from Mogadishu-Somalia.

We arrived here on Monday, Dec 18,2006. Our team includes three ophthalmologists and one technician.We were warmly received by our local partners. Dr. Abdul Razzaq Dalmar is the only practicing eye surgeon in Mogadishu, serving Central and Southern Somalia.

He is a very energetic, learned and kind hearted person. He has established a small eye hospital (NUR EYE HOSPITAL) in Mogadishu in 2001, when he returned from UK after 12 years. Our camp is being held in this hospital.

Dr Dalmar has already booked cataract cases for us. So far we have performed 180 cataract surgeries with IOL implantation. We are working in shifts, so our Eye camp is working fifteen hours a day. We have plans to perform about 500 surgeries.

We also met Dr Fujji, Officer In Charge of WHO office to establish links and initiate collaboration.

I visited Benadaar University, established by Benadaar Foundation, a Non Profit organisation. This Foundation is formed by 16 local doctors for the revival of educational system in Somalia. Their medical college is in its fifth year. This is the only functional medical college in Central and Southern Somalia. Their mission qualifies them for the membership of our FIMA Consortium of Medical Colleges (CIMCO) for which they are very keen to join. They need a lot of support and encouragement. Dr Dalmar is one of the founding member of this Foundation. He is also the current president of Somalian Medical Association ( 250 doctors). They would like to apply for affliation with FIMA.


2. REPORT FROM CHAD
Two eye surgeons and one technician from Pakistan under the leadership of Dr Intzar Hussain have been in CHAD since Saturday, Dec 14, 2006. They have completed their assigned mission and are now getting ready to fly back to Pakistan. They have performed 255 cataract surgeries.

Alhamdulillah, the FIMA SAVE VISION campaign is working out very well in both Chad and Somalia, 2 nations most deserving of our medical assistance and encouragement.

Your excellent medical & humanitarian efforts benchmarks against the best and sets examples which are extremely difficult to emulate. Congratulations Prof. Hafeez and all our opthalmologists and allied health professionals involved in this most noble task.

1. FIMA SAVE VISION : From Darkness to Light
Somalia remained in civil war for 16 years which led this country to a state of massive destruction and poverty. Health facilities are in a miserable state and ophthalmic care is negligible. For 10.5 million population, only 6 qualified eye surgeons are available, out of which only 4 are actively performing surgeries. It is estimated that about 2% of the people are blind, more than 50% are due to cataracts.

FIMA and Arab Medical Union (AMU) representatives met in Cairo on November 22, 2006 to discuss the Save Vision Campaign in Somalia. WHO coordinator for Prevention Of Blindness (POB) in Somalia and the Director of MINHAL (Somalian N.G.O) were also present at this meeting.

After considering all aspects of the existing situation and requirements, FIMA and AMU agreed to work in Somalia as partners for Save Vision Project. Ten thousands surgeries are planned till 31 Dec 2007.

2. VISION PROJECT IN NIGER BY DOCTORS WORLD WIDE TURKEY
Doctors Worldwide Turkey, Hayat Foundation?s sister organization for international relief, sent 5 volunteers from Turkey to perform eye operations in Niger. With the help of some Turkish NGOs, 3 ophthalmic surgeon and 2 nurses went to Tesova, Niger last week. They brought operating microscope, generators and other equipment and performed the operations at Tesova State Hospital.

Team leader Dr Erhan Sarisin gave the following brief. "Tesova is in the middle of the country. Total population of Niger is 14.5 million but there are only 10 ophthalmic surgeons. Cataract is very common here and because of poverty and insufficient number of surgeons, people live in darkness even at a young age. Niger is a very poor country. When we operated we requested to see them the following day for a follow up. They stayed outside of the hospital overnight because they had nowhere to stay. We worked till late nights and operated more than 250 cataract patient in 5 days."

We are planning to start fistula operations for women suffering from fistula complications from childbirth which is very common in Niger.

1. Letter from The Student Chapter Scientific Medical Association, Jerusalem, Palestine ( SMA )
Dear Respected Brothers and Sisters in Islam;

We are writing this e-mail as the student chapter of the Scientific Medical Association (SMA), Jerusalem, Palestine; a member of the Federation of Islamic Medical Associations (FIMA). We would like to humbly introduce ourselves.

Ten years ago, with much difficulty, the first Palestinian medical school was established at Al-Quds University, Jerusalem. This medical school, currently, is the single Palestinian institution training undergraduates for the Palestinian community. The medical school accepts the top students nationwide. Each year a limited and small number of students are admitted in a highly competitive atmosphere. The school, in other words, embraces the brainpower of the country. Those thirty-some, carefully selected students could, if appropriately nurtured, effect a huge change in our community in different areas.

The school is trying its best to provide the highest levels of instruction and training; however, the Palestinian students remain at some disadvantage in terms of international recognition and post-graduate opportunities. Our students are highly motivated, ambitious, and eager to change, serve and develop. However, our situation here in Palestine is not an easy one. It is practically the norm to be struggling for the most trivial of rights and needs- daily, in our lives and academia. We are trying our best to reach out to other communities around the world to introduce ourselves globally, to explore, and to expand our future opportunities.

This work is being done by students. Only recently, a congregation long dreamt of finally became a reality; bursting with activity; agile and impatient to serve, connect, and inspire: The Scientific Medical Forum at SMA-FIMA! A congregation that brings all Palestinian medical students together where they can share ideas, grow, give out and address the world. We are proud to belong to the collective efforts of Muslims around the Globe.

This e-mail is only a starter, Insha-Allah. We look forward to hearing back from you to start exchanging ideas and prospects. May Allah help us serve each other in good for his sake!

Prof. Kasule is keen to meet doctors and medical students in UK and Ireland and to conduct workshops on Islamic Medicine and Medical Ethics. There is no fee but organisers are free to make voluntary collection from participants for refreshments and logistic expenses.

1. NEWS FROM FIMA SAVE VISION
My trip to Sudan in this blessed month of Ramadhan was most fruitful. Two Eye camps were conducted in the province of Khartoum. This is the first of its kind at such a massive scale during this Holy Month. Five surgeons from Pakistan participated. We examined nearly 10,000 patients and operated well above 300 cases.

We finalized relief activities for Somalia. Mr Hasab o Rasool and I will visit Mogadishu in the next few days. The program will be finalized by our Sudanese brothers as they are in close contact with the Somalian authorities.

Prof Mamoun from Sudan IMA will be in Pakistan in November at the invitation of FIMA Save Vision. In addition to delivering various lectures & addresses he will sign an MOU with Peshawar Medical College.

A training workshop for the ophthalmologists will commence on 6th of Nov. Four ophthalmologists will participate. Dr. Intzar has finalized the arrangements.

1. FIMA INTERNATIONAL MEDICAL EDUCATION SYMPOSIUM - CIMCO
Dear all
Assalamu 'alaikum w.w.

Thank you very much for all your enthusiasm and support. I am writing to announce that the Symposium that was planned on the 22nd - 24th of October in Kuala Lumpur has to be postponed for a few reasons.

I would like to apologise for all the inconvenience caused. Insha Allah we will plan better next time and give ample time for everyone to prepare better and be heavily involved in the programme.

For you information the application for registration this time came mostly from Indonesia and Malaysia. I think this is a good sign that we are moving forward in this region to be among the best medical school in the world. I pray that we will be successful in our efforts

3. VISIT TO TURKEY

4. FIMA SAVE VISION - OPTHALMOLOGY TRAINING IN PAKISTAN
Dear Dr. Aly Mishal,

Eid Mubarak.

I apologise for this delayed reply. I have been involved in the organization of 10 free eye camps planned for November 2006 in Pakistan and help with PIMA humanitarian relief in earth quake affected areas.

I will ensure the necessary documents are faxed to your kind self ASAP.

The opthalmology training programme for the doctors from Sudan and Jordan both phaco and oculoplasty will operate simultaneously as both facilities and the expertise are available in our department.

We will take these doctors away from Lahore to an eye camp for 2 days, where they will be able to perform surgeries.

We will also arrange programmes with other doctors, ophthalmologists, media and the business community in the evenings.

We look forward to their arrivals including Prof. Mamoon Humaida. President Sudan IMA (SIMA) on 17th Nov 2006.

We would also like to create awareness in Pakistan about the current situation in Palestine and Darfur. FIMA Save Vision welcomes other doctors to join these ophthalmology short courses.
