Free Eye Camps in Nigeria January 2014

After completion of two free eye camps in Gombe and Kaduna States of Nigeria in December 2013, where 1247 free eye surgeries were conducted, FIMA Save Vision had another two free eye camps in Bauchi & Kaduna States in January 2014, where 1007 free eye surgeries with implantation of intraocular lens were performed.

Bauchi Free Eye Camp:

Bauchi 2014 Eye Camp took place at Bayara General Hospital at Bayara, Bauchi. The Eye Camp commenced on 15th January with impressive turn out by the patients, Ophthalmic  doctors, nurses, support staff etc. It was a camp sponsored by I Care Women and Youth Initiative and fully supported by IMAN. I Care Women and Youth Initiative (ICWYI) is an NGO founded by Dr. Hajiya Amina Namadi Sambo, the wife of the Vice President Federal Republic of Nigeria. We had over 600 patients who benefited from the screening and got other treatment other than cataract operation. A total of 527 patients had successful Cataract operation during this period.

On the 18th January, a ceremony was organised for the purpose of flagging off and advocacy for the Eye Camp. The occasion was attended by the representative of the Executive Governor of Bauchi State, the Speaker of Bauchi State Assembly, Mallam Yahaya Mohammed Miya. The Founder of I Care Women and Youth Initiative, Dr. Hajiya Namadi Sambo was unavoidably absent due to some urgent national engagement, but fully represented by Lt Col Shehu Ibrahim(r) OON, who happens to be the Secretary Board of Trustees of ICWYI. He read the speech of the founder in which she underscored the partnership between FIMA and ICWYI in the area of Eye Care. Other dignitaries that attended the occasion were, the Honourable Commissioner for Health Bauchi State Ministry of Health; AG Permanent Secretary Ministry of Health Bauchi State; other Directors from the Ministry; members of Bauchi State House of Assembly; Medical Director Bayara General Hospital Bauchi, other medical staff, students of school of nursing, the media and also patients who had their operations done.

After the ceremony, the Special guests went to open and clean the eye operation performed the previous day on some of the patients and also advised them to adhere to the dos and donts  given to them by their nurses. From there, they moved to the theatre where they witnessed some of the operations going on after which they proceeded to the pharmacy to inspect the drugs brought for the purpose.

Kaduna Free Eye Camp:

Kaduna free eye camp was conducted on 20th to 24th January 2014 at Yousaf Hospital Kaduna Nigeria. Partner organizations apart from FIMA Save Vision were IIRO (International Islamic Relief Organization), IMAN (Islamic Medical Association Nigeria) & Haja Fatima Mai Boro. 480 patients operated for cataract with Intraocular lens Implantation. National coordinator FIMA Save Vision Nigeria Dr. Imam Wada Bello and Patron FIMA Save Vision in Nigeria Engr. Ibrahim Abdullah Maimaje supervised the camp. Hajia Maryam Yahaya Sani chairperson of Khalifa Foundation & Lt Col Shehu Ibrahim (r) (Secretary to the Board of Trustees of I-CARE Women and Youth Initiatives) also visited the Camp.

Director FIMA Save Vision Dr. Intzar Hussain had a meeting with representatives of IMA Nigeria and appreciated their efforts for the smooth conduction of the eye camps in Bauchi & Kaduna State by FIMA Save Vision.

Another meeting of sponsors & stakeholders of FIMA Save Vision in Nigeria was conducted at kaduna which was attended by Engr. Ibrahim Abdullah Maimaje, Dr. Imam wada bello, Haja Fatima mai boro, Lt col Shehu Ibrahim, Hajia Maryam Yahya Sani and representatives of IMA Nigeria. This meeting was presided by Dr Intzar Hussain. In this meeting strategy for future camps and workshop of corneal transplantation to train the local eye surgeons in 2014 were decided.
