As intense violence once again rocks blind mortar shells Somalia’s capital, SOYDA Mobile team continues working throughout the country particularly Mogadishu-Afgoi corridor to provide life saving medical care, the civilian population of Mogadishu is trapped by the conflict, and has paid a heavy toll in recent fighting in residential neighborhoods.

Due to that the displacement flees from several places in Mogadishu has increased and most of them are Afgoi - Mogadishu corridor IDPs.

SOYDA has doubled its routine medical activities support IDP disadvantages living at the out reach areas. During the course SOYDA have carried out 2 days of free visitation and treatment activities on 14th – 15th May 2010 at Garasbaley IDP cluster in the corridor.

Findings are: -

  • Total screened cases are 687
  • Most of the under five old children suffer acute Respiratory infections, Diarrhea and Malnutrition and some cases of Whooping cough seen during screening.
  • Based on our observations shelter issues are the biggest problem, particularly those newly fleed from Bakara area due to mortar shells
  • With due respect, UN & International aid agencies are absent due to security reasons.
  • The environmental sanitation was poor and overcrowding at many places in the IDP camps can be ruining the public sanitary measures.
  • Shortage of food supply and water
