Assalamualaikum WBT and a very good evening

Distinguished guests, brothers & sisters.

On behalf of the Federation of Islamic Medical Associations ( FIMA ) I would like to welcome all the participants to our Joint International Scientific Convention on Sexually Transmitted Diseases, HIV / AIDS and Bioethics.

I would like to thank all our brothers & sisters in Turkey under the distinguished chairmanship of Prof. Ihsan Karaman for the excellent hosting and organization of this international convention.

In the past 2 days we had our 24th FIMA Council Meeting attended by representatives of Islamic Medical Associations (IMAs) from all over the world. FIMA has 32 country IMAs affliated to it with a representation of about 50,000 doctors.

And in the next two days, we would be deliberating on major issues related to the science and bioethics of STDs and HIV/AIDS in our Joint International Scientific Convention.

The quality of medical expertise within the FIMA fraternity and her close liaison with scholars of Islamic jurisprudence has enabled her to be at the cutting edge of medical bio-ethics as examined from the Islamic perspective. This has been deliberated in various of her international conventions and scribed in her Annual FIMA Year Books.

This joint international convention is another expression of our love and passion for medical knowledge and her examination and analysis from an Islamic perspective.

I hope you will all have an enlightening conference and would also take the opportunity to enjoy the historical sites in Turkey.

My sincere thanks to all members of IMAs who have traveled from far and wide to attend this annual FIMA convention.

I pray to Allah that He bestows your organisation the best of rewards and bless this international meeting of minds and hearts.

Camp Program

The camp program is composed of two main parts:

I. The Cultural Program:
This is the main program that covers the main theme of the camp.

The time allocated for this part is the first 5 hours in the morning. The schedule is depicted in Table 1 below.

This part of program is combined and common for both males and females. The location is in Al-Madinah Auditorium.

II. The Complementary Program:
This part of the program fills up the rest of the time starting after completion of the morning session of the main cultural program. The schedule is depicted in Table 2 ; will be sent later - includes outdoor, scouting activities, community projects etc

FORMAT OF FIMA COUNCIL MEETING 2007; 12-13 JULY 2007; ISTANBUL

The agenda and format of the 24th FIMA Council Meeting was e-mailed on 2 Mar 2007 via FIMA UPDATES No. 23 ( Kindly see APPENDIX VIII )

The features include :

1. Exco report will be presented by the president
2. Accounts will be presented by the treasurer
3. IMA reports must be submitted in advance. Activities for 2006 must be presented in 5 minutes in 10 slides.
4. All IMAs kindly fill the Annual Reporting Forms for 2006 ( 2nd REMINDER )
5. There will be 4 workshops to discuss and elaborate on 4 core and niche areas of FIMA ( see below for details )
6. Since elections will be held in 2007, there was a proposal to ensure only one IMA is presented in the executive committee to expand the representation of IMAs in the exco.

1. FIMA-HAYAT FOUNDATION INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE 2007, ISTANBUL - DELEGATION FROM JORDAN
Assalamu Alaikum

In reference to your e-mail requesting numbers of delegations from various IMAS, this is the final list from Jordan:

1- Delegates to participate in the FIMA council meeting : 5

2- Speakers in the HIV/AIDS Scientific Convention: 3

One of them is Dr. Adnan Jaljuli, our senior ophthalmologist, who wants to make a 15-20 minutes presentation at the Gala dinner, about the latest achievements in FIMA Save Vision in Palestine. He will also give a short overview on the combined committee, which he chairs, to take care of Palestinian patients treated in Jordan.

3- The large delegation that will attend the Scientific Convention, 37, with their accompanying family members, the number will be 82.

We will probably arrive on the 12th and leave on the 18th. Our flights are still not confirmed as there is great difficulty getting flights back to Malaysia as this is summer and all the Arabs want to spent their summer in Malaysia! But we will be in Istanbul insyaAllah, to enjoy your brotherhood.

We will collect all the registration fees for the conference and give it to you when we arrive in Istanbul.

Postponement of Umrah Program

Dear Brothers in all IMAs

Assalamu Alaikum.

I would like to announce that the 6th Umrah Program for medical students that was supposed to be arranged during Summer this year 2007 has been postponed. This decision was taken in IMAKSA / WAMY after detailed discussion in the organizing committee. There were some obstacles and problems encountered in the previous programs. We postponed this announcement hoping that we can overcome these problems in due time. However, it seems that the solution needs further evaluation and more time. Therefore, we will work on this and we will try to find the best options in the nearest possible time. Please forgive us for the inconvenience and bear with us till further announcement.

THEME of Program: Excellence Promotion for Skillful Medical Students

The core program of this camp will focus on the skills of the ideal Muslim medical students in all aspects of personality. It boosts the development of essential skills expected to be prominent features of contemporary Muslim medical students. These skills compose aspects of the desirable personality inspired in the light of Islamic teachings and international standards. It promotes and excels the human development of our youth. It provides tools and open pathways to fulfill their ambitions to be successful in their life in general and and their profession particularly. It discusses skills and issues that are not commonly learnt in formal university education and not included in traditional textbooks. It helps in directing the students of medicine and its branches to be effective participants in the development of their Muslim nation and the world in general.

The program will be performed in the format of a series of brief talks followed by group workshops on the same topics over the few days time of the camp.

Complementary programs will be given in the form of lectures, discussion meetings and debates on Islamic and professional issues. Eminent local and international speakers are invited for participation in the camp activities.

OVERVIEW OF THE CAMP

• An annual gathering of Muslim medical students from all over the world.
• The students participate in a comprehensive program of educational, cultural, social, sport, tourist and recreational activities.
• The operations follow closely the scouting camp system.
• The administration of the camp and its activities are primarily run by the students themselves under supervision by senior doctors.
• The duration of the camp is full 5 days.

Time Schedule

• Registration time - Any time from now till Deadline Date.
• Deadline date for Registration - 10 July 2007
• Last Date of Arrival to camp site - 25 July 2007
• Period of camping - 26 - 30 JULY 2007
• Date of departure - 31 July 2007

OBJECTIVES

• To foster brotherhood among Muslim students of various Islamic Medical Associations (IMAs) and countries.
• To enhance mutual understanding and cooperation.
• To exchange information and experiences.
• To provide leadership training and organizational skills.
• To strengthen the involvement of students in IMA activities.
• To promote communication and networking among the student chapters of IMAs and other countries.

WHO SHOULD ATTEND

• Students of Medical and Health Colleges who are affiliated to and/or nominated by Islamic Medical Associations.
• "Students" can be extended to include first year house officer or newly graduates.
• Both males and females may be accepted for participation in this camp.
• "Medical and Health Colleges" could be college of medicine, dentistry, pharmacy, health sciences or any other health-related college.
• "Islamic Medical Associations" (IMAs) should be active, associate or pending members of FIMA.

Male and Female Segregation:
In this particular camp, female medical students may participate with observation of the following conditions:

1. The males and females will be absolutely segregated in all activities during the whole period of program including residence, dining and sports places, transportation, recreational and social activities.
2. The only occasion where both males and females may share the activity is the cultural program in morning sessions from 9:00 AM to 1 PM. In such gathering there will be arrangement of each of them to be seated on one side of the lecture room. However, both groups will share questions and discussion.
3. Needless to say, both males and females are expected to be dressed in a decent Islamic manner.

LANGUAGE OF THE CAMP

• The field language is English.
• The lecturers will specify their language of delivery. Simultaneous Arabic/English translation is provided.

NUMBER OF PARTICIPANTS

• 150 students
• Each IMA is allowed a maximum of 20 students, with more quotas for the organizing IMA and the host country. When females are participating, the male to female ratio should be 2:1.
• Senior supervisors: 1-2 supervisors from each IMA are allowed to supervise students delegation and help in organization. Supervisors should be exclusively from medical professionals.

EXPENSES

• The IMAs or individual students are responsible for the cost of their return tickets to hosting country as well as their Visa fees.
• There are NO registration fees for the camp.
• Accommodation, meals and local transportation will be provided FREE OF CHARGE by IMAKSA/WAMY during the days of camp activities.
• Receiving of participants at Jakarta Airport and transportation to camp site will be arranged for free of charge only if the full details of the confirmed flights of the participants are submitted to us ahead of time (at least one week before the camp i,e. before 18 July 2007).

VISA REQUIREMENTS

• Visa for entry into the host country is the SOLE RESPONSIBILITY of the IMAs and/or the participating students.
• IMAKSA or WAMY unfortunately CANNOT secure visas for the participating students.

REGISTRATION

• The registration deadline is 10 July 2007
• All students must be registered by their IMAs.
• Students not affiliated to any IMAs may register through a neighbouring or apply directly.
• Kindly note that it is necessary to complete the enclosed registration form and fax or e-mail to the address below.

We have lost a sincere dedicated person who spent even the last days in the way of Allah. He came to Karachi to see his ailing mother. I talked to him and he was worried about frequent power failures in Karachi and the hot weather. I suggested and he agreed to buy a generator before he left Pakistan.

I also told him about the theft in PIMA offices. He was worried about FIMA’s record. I now fully understand that his work, friendship, anger was only to please HIM.

Allah bestow His mercy upon him and give him eternal peace in Jannah.

DR. Azhar’S Death is a shock for all of us. I had a chance to talk to him for more than 30 minutes on phone and we discussed many thing about FIMA and primarily about CIMCO.

It would be consolation for his soul if we could put in more energy in CIMCO and change its shape from a "paper organization" to a living "body".

6. MESSAGE FROM PAST-PRESIDENT PIMA

Assalamu alaikum

I called him on the 13th instant, while he was in Karachi, nursing his old mother, and we talked for an hour or so, his last conversation with me.

He was so ambitious about Medina Project and FIMA ventures. I asked him if he had a re-birth to fulfill such towering accomplishments and he laughed as if he knew the start of a new chapter of his unending life.

Who says that he was an old man? He never grew old, his spirit was young, his gestures were youthful, he was full of life and his heart was filled with Passion and Iman to its brim.

I had been his close friend for the last 15 years, I feel as if I am an orphan, so are my sisters PIMA and FIMA.

He was a beacon of hope, a source of inspiration, a guide to hold your hand, a torch bearer to let you pass through darkness and a great teacher to make you learn, he tried to give back everything he possessed and envisioned FIMA and all IMAs as the leading medical bodies in their own right.

He was a visionary leader who worked and strived for the cause of humanity and Islam.

May Allah SWT bless his soul in Jannah and grant us ability to follow his foot steps.

The man who devoted his life to helping others, connecting his brothers in Medical field through FIMA. This federation to whom he holds a lot of love and devotion,were among a lot of good deeds he had.

I pray deeply from my heart for him all Rahmah And Maghfirah and Jannat.

What makes it softer to my sad heart that I had the chance to greet him In Riyadh Sheraton 1 day before he left Saudi Arabia, together with my Brother Dr. Atalla Al Ruhaily.

When he asked to see both of us to remind (as always he used do) about the role of IMA Saudi Arabia in FIMA, and study alternatives for the coming student's summer camp July 2007

To be able to participate in FIMA SCIENTIFIC CONVENTION to be held July 13-15, 2007 in Istanbul, Turkey as author or attendee, the applicants have to fill the registration form which requires the information about participation, hotel dates and payment types.

In order to make coherent Hotel Arrangements on time, the participants who don't prefer to lodge at Topkapi Eresin Barcelo Hotel at which the Convention will be held, have to inform us about the hotel rate intervals that they can afford until May 25.

Organizing Committee notifies respectfully that responsibility of late rezervations, extra hotel payments or any lodging problems that will occur due to the applications after May 25 is the applicants' themselves.

I had spent a good 1 week with him in Jeddah and Madinah just a week ago

My wife and I got to know him and his wife very closely during this period

it was a wonderful period, we spent meals together, walked to the mosque of the prophet and visited the proposed Madinah Knowledge Economic City and other historical sites together.

And we discussed openly our feelings about FIMA

He was very passionate about FIMA and the proposed Madinah KEC was yet another of his sole endeavour to strategise FIMA on the world map

To loose 2 stalwarts of FIMA within a short space of time is most painful for our fraternity

But we humbly accept this test with patience and preserverance

And more so to his beloved wife and children, we hope that Allah bestow them with sabr and acceptance of this destiny

What a loss to the Muslim community

I am sad and filled with sorrow and sadness to let you know that Prof. Azhar Khan has passed away yesterday (14/5/2007)

He was on his way from Karachi to New York, and while waiting at the transit in Dubai airport, God peacefully took his soul to the Heavens, Inshallah.

May Allah cleanse all his sins and bury him with the companions of our prophet.

Prof. Azhar died peacefully. He performed Umrah and visited Madinah and spent a good time with his family,

This is can only happen to those who are close to our God.

May Allah bestow His mercy as he was one of those who fear Allah at every word he said and every work he had done.

This is a sad moment for all who knew him. I met Dr. Azhar last week in Riyadh to follow up our Jeddah meetings and I have always been impressed with his dedication to the Madinah project and his willingness to work with us full time, helping us to realize our dreams to make Madinah again a beacon of Knowledge.

May Allah (SWT ) reward his intentions to be of service to the city that is beloved to Allah (SWT ). His departure is a great loss to all Muslims and his achievements in the creations and growth of FIMA will be Inshaa Allah rewarded by Allah ( SWT )in placing him in highest Ferdous in the Jannah.

We all have the duty to keep him in our prayers and doa and our commitment to continue the task that he passed on to all of us. The achievement of the goals he shared with all of us will inshaa Allah be rewarded with hasanat and raise his status in Jannah

Subject : Killing of Dr. Adeeb Al-Ghalabi, IMAI President.

I am sorry to inform you that the President of the Islamic Medical Association of Iraq (IMAI), ~Al-shaheed~ Dr. Adeeb Al-Ghalabi, was killed today Saturday afternoon when he left his clinic in Mosul, Iraq.

Dr. Adeeb was one of the founder members of IMAI and a human rights activist. He was one of the highly respected professional in the field of ENT and one of the famous names in ~aldawa~ to Allah.

I am sorry to inform you of this bad news, but we pray to Allah to place him among the righteous in His Jannah.

During the 4th IMAI annual assembly in March 07, Dr. Adeeb was elected as the 2nd IMAI President for three years from 2007-2010. His predecessor was, Dr. Mahmoud Al-Haj Kasim (2004-2007).

I would like to inform you that among the 17 founder members of IMAI in 2003, two of them have been killed , and six have left Iraq for security reasons.

However, Alhamdulillah, IMAI is still functioning despite these dangerous circumstances. And we ask Allah to change our state to the best one and remove the enemies of Iraq enemies.

Finally, I am sorry again for this news, but I pray to Allah to bless Dr. Adeeb Al-Ghalabi, and put him in his Jannah.

ANNOUNCEMENT OF THE THIRD INTERNATIONAL MUSLIM

LEADERS’ CONSULTATION ON HIV/AIDS

AND

CALL FOR ABSTRACTS.

Background:
In the year 2000, a group of Muslim practitioners interested in using the Islamic approach to combat HIV/AIDS met in Durban South Africa during the International AIDS Conference on AIDS. They included representatives from the Islamic Medical Association of Uganda, Islamic Medical Association of South Africa and the Malaysian AIDS Council. It was noted that the experiences and culture of Muslim communities in the fight against AIDS were not being adequately catered for by current international AIDS conferences. It was agreed that International Muslim Leaders’ Consultations on AIDS should be held to share the experiences of Muslim communities and chart the way forward regarding the Islamic approach to combating AIDS. The 1st International Muslim Leaders Consultation on HIV/AIDS was held in Kampala, Uganda in 2001 and it was organized by the Islamic Medical Association of Uganda. The theme for the consultation was ~Strategies for strengthening and expanding the international Muslim community response to AIDS~. The consultation motto was ~Jihad on AIDS: Self discipline using Allah’s guidance~. During this consultation it was agreed that an international centre for promotion of the Islamic approach to HIV/AIDS be established in Uganda. The second International Muslim Leaders Consultation on AIDS was held in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, in 2003 and it was organized by the Malaysian AIDS Council in conjunction with the Malaysian Government. The theme was ~The Caring Ummah, transforming the response~. During this consultation, it was noted that there was a need to clarify the concept of the Islamic approach to HIV/AIDS and its implementation among the Muslim communities. In the process of building on these experiences, the Islamic Medical Association of Uganda in conjunction with the Ethiopian Islamic Affairs Supreme Council are organizing the third International Muslim Leaders Consultation on HIV/AIDS (3rd IMLC).

EVENT MISSION :
In a time so disrupted by political infightings and cross border aggressions, it is of paramount importance to inform the youths today that the belligerence leading to war can and should be avoided.

The seeds of war are sown by misunderstanding and so it should be our duty to help students identify what promotes belligerence and what pacifies it.

The CUCMS Dinner & Concert Night brought together all of the university’s student organizations to collaborate on a single event, intended to promote an anti-war message.

From the CUCMS Student Council, to the Student Chapter of the Islamic Medical Association Malaysia (IMAM-SC) and the Foundation (pre-med/pharmacy) Association.

A massive undertaking that will witness a first time ever cooperation between all of CUCMS student organizations.

THE PLOT :
It narrates the story of 3 different people, Ayman Basir, Ahmed Farouk & Natan Herschel, and how their lives are affected by the war around them. The story depicts the futility of hatred and how such bitter emotions are passed down generations. Violence, as the story unfolds, is an endless vicious cycle which only inflames further with every victim it claims. At the heart of the drama, viewers will see how much of a tragedy it is when the fuel that keeps the flames of warfare burning is hatred.

THE VERDICT :
An overwhelming thumbs up ! Great job.

1. REPORT FROM IMAM UK & EIRE EMERGENCY MEDICINE 2007

I would like to convey my gratitude and appreciation to all who attended Emergency Medicine 2007 (EM07), all who worked behind the scene of EM07 (including the cook and his team) and all speakers that enlightened us.

From the eye-opener speech by Dr Burhan, to non-stop laughter by Dr Heng Aik Cheng (plus his enthusiasm on Emergency Response Unit - come guys and gals join in this unit), to bonds of friendship through practicals and case scenarios.

Enlightenment on fiqh medicine and Islamic medical ethics by Prof Dr Abdul Latiff, which in Cyberjaya University College of Medical Sciences is conducted through PBL module (Problem Based Learning). Interesting isn't it learning fiqh of medicine in 12 complete PBL cases. Closing with a tearful and touching presentation (and I mean seriously crying ) by Dr Ang Swee Chai on her Palestine experience.

Anyone would like to work for a year in Ahlu Bab Hospital? She can recommend you easily...

Congratulations to all the committee members and those who had chipped in to make it happen. I learnt a lot and really appreciate all the effort- really, it must have been quite (very?) difficult and stressful putting it all together. But its all worth it, don't you think?

Apart from the noise of the plane engines and the chattering of the stewardess, it was a quiet subuh up high in the heavens. All the other passengers were fast asleep and the ambience was just about right to reminisce on the past few days in the land where the Blue Nile meets the White Nile, a majestic view from the Khartoum Hilton.

I have always felt indebted to my Sudanese brothers from my early days in university in the United Kingdom. Now, that must be some 30 years ago.

Many of my Malaysian contemporaries would remember well the present Sudanese Minister of Interior, who was the representative of the President at the SIMA (Sudanese Islamic Medical Association) International Conference on Islam & Modern Medical Issues. He gave us our first tutorial on the purposes of the Shariah (Maqasid as-Shariah).

The past Minister of Foreign Affairs, Dr. Mustafa Osman, was the vice-president of FOSIS (Federation Of Students Islamic Societies) when I was inducted into the executive committee of this student movement which then was at the forefront of all Islamic student activities inside and outside the campuses.

My memory fails to recollect the name of the Sudanese brother in Cardiff who taught me how to make the muqaddimah in a majlis by first paying salutations to the prophet and reminding the audience of all the sacrifices Muhammad s.a.w. made to this ummah and that he had "ballagah risalah, waaddal amanah, wanasahal ummah, wa jihadifillah hi haqqa jihadih" (to testify that he has disseminated the message, passed on the amanah, advised the ummah and taught us the true form of jihad).

And everytime I am in the company of Prof. Malik Badri, our dear father from the Sudan, I am enriched and enlightened, given a perspective and insight into the Quran and the traditions of the prophet which truly mesmerizes me. May Allah reward him with good health and longevity to share his wisdom with this ummah.

It was therefore no secret of my desire to be with our brothers in SIMA. And not just because of a sense of duty being the president of FIMA (Federation of Islamic Medical Associations). I could never hope to rival the achievements of my immediate predecessor, Dr. Aly Mishal, who traveled afar to stamp the presence of FIMA world-wide.

And true to expectations, our Sudanese hosts were immaculate in their hospitality. Our arrival was greeted by Prof. Mamoun Homeida (President of SIMA) and Bro. Hasab ur-Rsoool (Executive Director of SIMA) at the airport tarmac. We were led to the VVIP lounge and our visas and immigration clearance were handled swiftly whilst we sipped at hot Sudanese coffee.

By the way, Bro. Hasab ur-Rasool was our mujahid brother who was detained by the Ethiopian forces in Mogadishu. Together with Prof. Hafeez ur-Rahman and other opthalmologists they had been to Mogadishu, undertaken 5 eye camps and performed 500 eye operations and blessed the Somalis with new found vision.

Whilst Prof. Hafeez ur-Rahman et al flew out of Mogadishu, being the excellent host he was, Bro. Hasab ur-Rasool stayed behind to clear the final logistics. The Ethiopian forces "invaded" Somalia, Bro. Hasab ur-Rasool missed the outgoing flight by 1 hour and was captured and accused of complicity with the Islamic court. He spent the next 21 days in prison. It took various letters from FIMA, SIMA, WHO and finally the office of the President of Sudan to finally secure his release. May Allah reward his sacrifices and brave deeds.

We even had an outrider to clear the traffic to enable our uninterrupted arrival at Khartoum Hilton. I cannot help feeling like a "head of state" making an official visit to the Sudan ! And for all of our travels in the streets of Khartoum, our 5-6 black BMWs, Mercedes was preceded by the same outrider. Our outrider policeman must have some variant of Ehlers Danhlos Syndrome, because he was so malleable and plastic, performing various manoeuvres on his "Harley Davidson" short of a full somersault ! It was indeed a sight to relish.

The four day conference was unequivocally a quatum leap for our SIMA brothers. Their excellence in the realm of medical and humanitarian relief, recognized at the national and international level, was now being paralleled by their brilliant leadership in the domain of Islamic bioethics. The scholars of jurisprudence and the Sudanese medical fraternity were requesting more of similar sessions to update them on these advancing biotechnologies. The former to enable them to issue contemporary and relevant fatwas and the latter to be informed of the cutting edge biomedicine.

These were indeed major achievements which FIMA is proud to be associated with. I think my sentiments were shared by the other 10 foreign speakers who invested their time and expertise in the 4 day deliberations.

But the highlight of my memories would be the exemplary character of the inheritors of SIMA. I had only just completed viewing "The Freedom Writers" which depicts the solitary crusade of a high school teacher to "nurture" the disadvantaged street kids who would otherwise fail to make it to college or even stay alive beyond 18 years of age. A must see.

The class of 203 in "The Freedom Writers" triggered me to reflect on the group of SIMA students who stuck to us like ants to sugar. The likes of Muhannad, who was my perpetual shadow like a personal bodyguard. Upon my departure on the 2nd April, he faithfully sat in the VVIP lounge with me and Prof. Abu Fadl Mohsein, Professor of Theology, Durban, South Africa. We had to virtually chase him home ! And Abu Baker made sure that my coffee cup was always filled and my lunch ready. Words fail to express my appreciation of these noble young souls of SIMA.

They were bustling with activity and enthusiasm around the Friendship Hall. They coordinated the transport, audio visual aids, ensured the flowing refreshments, printed the abstracts and power point presentations, ran errands, one student saw to the needs of each foreign speaker etc. Prior to my departure I had a full copy of all the power presentations, all the pictures taken and the lectures on line.

We had a great time with the students on our river Nile cruise and Dr. Sameer even slotted in a neurology tutorial ! Muhannad arranged for myself and Prof. Abu Fadl to visit the masjid and tomb of the Grand Mahdi. We learnt from the historical texts of his invaluable contribution to the preservation of the pristine teachings of Islam and their battles against the colonial British. A time for reflection to rejuvenate our roh of jihad.

A visit to Omdurman Islamic University, the oldest in the Sudan gave us the opportunity to speak to the medical undergraduates and infuse in them a sense of mission, medicine beyond borders and the lofty ideals of FIMA to gel the student fraternity world wide.

The culture of hard work, group dynamics and enthusiasm augurs well for the future of SIMA. They are getting hands on experience which would prepare them well for the arduous task of leadership which lies ahead. May Allah bless these young hearts and make them the equally brilliant leaders of SIMA in the future.

REPORT FROM BANGLADESH

Prof Omar Hasan Kasule had very successful and busy time in Dhaka.

1. He conducted a workshop on 'Research Methodology : Islamic Perspectives'. The participants were different research personalities and PhD students of Dhaka University And National University. The session was very interactive and lively.


2. He was the keynote speaker in a seminar on 'Ethico-Legal issues in Medical practice: Islamic perspectives. The audience were mainly Medical Educationists and Physicians. It was a highly successful gathering with a huge turn out from all facets of academia and medical practice. The Q & A which followed was very interactive. This represents a new era in the field of medicine in Bangladesh. I received endless phone calls from many doctors who requested for similar programs in the future.


3. He visited the corporate Head Office of the Ibn Sina Trust, the biggest healthcare NGO of Bangladesh. He also visited the diagnostic center of this Islamic Hospital.


4. He joined in the meeting with the Exco members of Bangladesh Institute of Islamic Thought.


5. He visited Ibn Sina Medical College and presented a lecture on 'Islamization of Education: Medical Perspectives’ The audience were academic staff and students of this Islamic Medical College. It created so much enthusiasm among the students which is beyond description.


6. He joined in a discussion with the vice chancellors and deans of various public and private universities. The subject was 'Islamization of Science'.

My dear brothers in the leadership and membership of IMASA.

My thanks to your ever resourceful FIMA representative, Dr. Ashraf, for requesting me to share a few of my thoughts on the occasion of your 27th Annual Convention. I have been on two separate occasions to South Africa. The first during IMASA’s hosting of the 2003 FIMA International Convention and in 2006 on the occasion of your 26th Convention in Pretoria.

You are continuing and enhancing the excellent traditions of your celebrated elders who had the vision and imagination to gestate FIMA in the early 1980s. I write from first hand experience that your representation in FIMA has been most vibrant and polished. The vocal presence of IMASA representatives in our Council meetings ensured that business gets done promptly and helps connect us with our history and mission.

It is therefore no surprise that IMASA features prominently in many of FIMA’s international collaborative efforts. One of our major achievements has been in the domain of humanitarian and medical relief. The presence of FIMA and her affiliates was immediate and impactful in the Pakistan earthquake, the Indonesian Tsunami, the Lebanon crisis and the acute on chronic Palestinian crisis among others. And this has been in no small measure attributed to the excellent coordination and networking that has its command station in Capetown !

IMASA’s pioneering efforts in addressing the HIV/AIDS pandemic from the Islamic perspective has set some enviable benchmarks for other IMAs to emulate. Your continuing reappraisal of your Jihad on HIV/AIDS, as this convention attempts to update, ensures that your efforts will always remain contemporary and at the cutting edge of the science and art of this dreaded disease.

Your various initiatives to "clone" the likes of the Ashrafs, the Khans, the Haruns, the Anwars, the Shabirs, the Yakubs etc would go a long way towards perpetuating the legacy of your works in IMASA. I was very delighted to speak to your enthusiastic medical students in Pretoria ( with the added benefit of shopping for African craft thrown in) and witness the strong presence of your younger residents.

FIMA students activities is another example of international collaboration at her best. Our Umrah & Ziarah programs, our summer and winter student camps has helped to gel our students world wide and endowed them a sense of mission and brotherhood/sisterhood beyond borders. I hope IMASA’s student chapter would be more actively involved in these programs.

Your annual convention would be an ideal occasion to celebrate these achievements which would heighten your confidence and passion to ascend greater heights. It is also a period of reflection and contemplation to search inwardly how much as individuals and an organization you have endeavoured to beseech the Pleasure of Allah through refinements of your human character and selfless service towards mankind.

I pray to Allah that He bestows your organisation the best of rewards and bless your annual meeting of minds and hearts.

REPORT FROM KHARTOUM, SUDAN 30th MARCH 2007
INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE ON ISLAM AND MODERN MEDICAL ISSUES
The event was officiated by Dr. Zubair Basheer Taha, Minister of Interior and Representative of the President. The Friendship Hall, where most official and major conferences are held, with a capacity of about 1,500 people was virtually full. It was widely covered by the media. Below is the address delivered by the President of FIMA.

His Excellency Minister of Interior, Dr. Zubair Basheer Taha, Representative of the President, Honourable Ministers, Representatives of the WHO, President of the Sudanese Islamic Medical Association (SIMA) and his executive committee, Distinguished Speakers and Guests, Ladies and Gentlemen.

On behalf of FIMA, may I congratulate SIMA on the inauguration of this international conference on Islam and Modern Medical Issues. You have continued to uphold and enhance the excellent traditions of your predecessors in SIMA who had the vision and imagination to nurture FIMA in the early 1980s. The archives of FIMA records that it was a doctor from Sudan who was the first chairman of the FIMA Council in 1981. And in July 2007, we will be staging our 24th FIMA Council meeting in Istanbul, Turkey together with our annual FIMA Scientific Convention. May I take this opportunity to invite all of you to join us in Istanbul.

The past 2 years has witnessed a flurry of activities in the realm of humanitarian and medical relief, showcasing the excellent collaborative efforts between SIMA and other IMAs anchored by FIMA, the parent body.

The first FIMA Medical Mission to Sudan in September 2004, led by Dr. Aly Mishal, then president of FIMA, snowballed into a further 8 FIMA Eye Camps which up to May 2006 involved 58 opthalmologists from 8 countries. And over a period of 15 months, 55,671 patients were examined and 5,267 operations were performed. A permanent ophthalmic facility, the FIMA Eye Hospital was established in Al-Genaina and is a reflection of the excellent cooperation between SIMA, FIMA and the local government authorities.

Our FIMA SAVE VISION dream team, led by Prof. Hafeez ur-Rahman from Pakistan, has envisioned a further 15,000 eye surgeries in 2007 alone and have already begun eye camps in neighbouring Chad and Mogadishu in Somalia. And to ensure capacity building and sustainability of the many Eye projects, workshops have been organized for the training of opthalmologists and technicians and collaborations have been mooted with various international relief agencies including WHO.

This streak of collaborative humanitarian and medical relief has been similarly examplary in the Pakistan earthquake, the Indonesian Tsunami, the Lebanon crisis and the acute on chronic Palestinian crisis among others.

FIMA students activities are another example of international collaboration at her best. Our Umrah & Ziarah programs, our summer and winter student camps has helped to gel our students world wide and endowed them a sense of mission, brotherhood & sisterhood beyond borders. My initial 2 days in Khartoum has been surrounded by your enthusiastic and hard working medical students, which augurs well for the future of SIMA. And I hope the SIMA student chapter would be similarly actively involved in FIMA?s international student and medical resident programs.

The quality of medical expertise within the FIMA fraternity and her close liaison with scholars of Islamic jurisprudence has enabled her to be at the cutting edge of medical bio-ethics as examined from the Islamic perspective. This has been deliberated in many of her international conventions and scribed in her Annual FIMA Year Books.

SIMA's convention in the ensuing 4 days is very commendable and is another expression of the love and passion for medical knowledge and her appropriate utilization in this age of advancing medical bio-technology.

I pray to Allah that He bestows your organisation the best of rewards and bless this international meeting of minds and hearts.
