FIMA SAVE SMILE (FSS)

FSS is a FIMA project for repair of cleft lip and/or palate mooted in 2008 in Jeddah and officially adopted by FIMA in 2010 in Makkah.

It is the second project after FIMA Save Vision (FSV) which began in 2005 and till end 2012 has undertaken 1 million eye out-patient consults and 100,000 cataract operations in 17 different countries. FSV won the Rosenthal humanitarian award from American College of Physicians in 2009.

The first FSS camp was held in Khartoum in March 2010. Up to early 2013, 504 surgeries have been performed in Sudan, Palestine, Somalia, Yemen, Mauritania & Syria.

In March 2013, the FSS team of 35 surgeons, anesthesiologists & nurses from IMANA (Islamic Medical Association of North America) & DWW-Turkey (Doctors World Wide) plan to perform 300-500 cleft repairs in Khartoum.

About FIMA

The Federation of Islamic Medical Associations (FIMA) was formed on December 31, 1981. Since then, 31 FIMA Council meetings have been held. The most recent was in Tanzania (7-8 August 2014). Currently, there are 26 full members, 9 associate members and 5 with observer status. This represents about 50,000 Muslim medical and health professionals.
