FIMA UPDATES 80
Dear Brothers and Sisters
Assalamu Alaikum

Another 104 ill and injured patients have died in Gaza over the past 2 days due to the lack of adequate health care. There are insufficient medicines in the available health facilities, medical equipment are in urgent need of service and repair and those requiring more intensive treatment or surgery are prevented from leaving Gaza by the stranglehold of the Israelis. Are we going to remain complacent and witness this systematic decimation of our brothers and sisters in occupied Palestine?

I urgently appeal to you all to deliver any available medicines and medical supplies to our partners (Partners International Medical Aid) for distribution in Gaza. Your contribution can save the life of a man, woman or child in Palestine. More than a third of all casualties are children!

Dear Brothers and Sisters, please respond with commitment and passion to the urgent appeals for assistance and relief from our colleagues in Gaza. May Allah (SWT) reward you all with Rahmah and Barakah Insha'Allah!

FIMA UPDATES 79
The President and Relief Coordinators Islamic Medical Associations
Humanitarian Relief NGO's

Dear Brothers and Sisters Assalamu Alaikum
The western world erupted with protest and outrage after the 'massacre' of 6 religious scholars in a local Jewish seminary in West Jerusalem. But they remain silent after the massacre of 120 innocent Palestine citizens doing nothing more than protecting their God-given birthplace. They remain silent on the systematic and blatant violation of all human rights of all the citizens of occupied Palestine since the creation of the illegitimate state of Israel. They remain silent on the thousands who have been killed, thousands more locked without fair trial in numerous prisons across Israel, millions more driven from their homes and living in exile across the Middle-East, Europe and elsewhere in the world. Those Palestinian brothers and sisters trapped in the various occupied territories including Gaza, West Bank and Jerusalem, are living under the most appalling conditions including access to basic essentials, access to health care, inadequate sanitation, contaminated drinking water, destroyed infrastructures including education, industries and other employment opportunities. More than 80% of the Palestinian population is living below the $2/day poverty line.

Brothers and Sisters, we, the health practitioners in our respective IMA's of FIMA, can make a real difference in the lives of those struggling families in Gaza and elsewhere. With a little bit of effort and good planning, I invite you to join us in making a difference! You can start by coordinating your membership and associated partners in contributing to 1 or more of the following projects:

  1. Cash collections and contributions can be forwarded to the FIMA Relief Account (see www.fimaweb.net for details). All complicated cases are being managed in the Islamic Hospital and associated partners in Jordan.
  2. Medicines and medical supplies can be collected and forwarded to our partners in Partners (Palestine) International Medical Aid (www.pimacare.net). See attachments for details. Please liaise with pharmaceutical companies and wholesalers for contributions in this regard.
  3. Medical relief teams including surgeons, paediatricians, primary health care practitioners etc.

For more details on any of these and other projects, please contact me directly. Remember, we can only succeed if we work together! May Allah (SWT) reward you all for your noble efforts!

Jazakallah Khair

URGENT APPEAL FOR VICTIMS OF BANGLADESH'S DEVASTATING FLOODS

Dear Readers:

Each year flooding in Bangladesh does millions of dollars worth of damage. There is a terrible loss to human life and livestock and colossal damage occurs to crops and whatever infrastructure that exists.

This year’s monsoons and the melting snow in the mountains of Nepal have brought utter devastation to the world's poorest country. Bangladesh, which is located in the deltaic region of three enormous rivers, the GANGES, the BRAHMAPUTRA and the MEGHNA is also crossed by 150 rivers, most of which are flowing way above dangerously high levels. More than half the country is under water and 38 out of the 64 Districts of Bangladesh are without adequate amounts of drinking water or food. Some two billion dollars of damage has already been estimated and the death toll is rapidly rising.

The human suffering, especially the children, the women and the old, as seen on TV is unbearable.

IMANA WILL DO ITS SHARE.

We appeal to the entire membership and all well wishers to once again come forward and open your hearts and pockets to relieve some of the sufferings of your less fortunate Brethren in Bangladesh. Your monetary contributions are urgently needed to rush dry food, drinking water and medicines to the affected. IMANA will work with agencies already on ground in Bangladesh.

Please send your donations/Zakat to IMANA via check or donate online. Kindly specify BD FLOODS. ALLAH WILL REWARD YOU FOR YOUR KINDNESS AND GENEROSITY.

Sincerely,
Hafizur Rehman MD
Chair, IMANA Relief

4. NEWS FROM DOCTORS WORLD WIDE
From: "anfal"
To: "Doctors Worldwide"
Sent: Tuesday, November 20, 2007 3:24 PM
Subject: Re: Green Crescent Cyclone in Bangladesh

Following our conversation this morning and also contact with the field workers in Bangladesh. The following can be said :

Despite publicity most of the worst hit areas have hardly been reached i.e. they are in the extreme coastal areas where there are no roads but only rivers and canal systems. Our team has managed to provide a few hundred food packages and money to some of these victims on Sunday; they hired a large fishing trawler.

What the people need is food and shelter. Clean drinking water is not required because all the tube wells are deep (300m) so they are not contaminated and still working.

The contents of the food packages are as follows;
> 5kg rice
> 2kg Lentils
> 2kg Potatoes
> 1kg salt

This will last a family of 5 for about 2-3 days at a cost of £4 per package.

However, larger packets containing similar items but with extras, for 1 months supply will cost about £75. They also need blankets which cost around £2.50 per piece. They require about 500+ If you are considering rebuilding their homes then a complete tin building will cost £175 each.

The areas we are working in are; Bhola Island, Daultatkhan, Charfession, Hazipur and Pautukali District. Some of the areas are only accessible by boat and since the area is not mapped, local knowledge is vital. So far we have done one round in Hazipur and will continue Wednesday. Our work is specialized because of the locations are deep in the delta.

Fortunately due to the DWW clinic and it's medical staff medical backup exist if the need arises and they went on the first trip, so far no medical emergency exist except those injured by falling debris.

In terms of funds we are using money from our orphans project which stands at about £5,000 which is currently in the Bangladesh Green Crescent account.

All the food, medication and materials are locally available in Bhola and large medical supplies are available in Dhaka. If you wish to contact the area then call Humyun on Bhola Island on 008801711481279 he speaks Urdu and some English

We will send photo's of the relief work soon and full feedback and expenditure details will be provided.

Thanking you
Faisal Mostafa

UPDATE ON MABFO CYCLONE SIDR RELIEF OPERATIONS
November 19, 2007

Two MABFO teams are at work in the cyclone affected areas - one in Bagerhat (working in Morelganj and Shoronkhola thanas) and the other at Patuakhali (Mirzaganj and Khepupara/Kolapara). MABFO is working in collaboration with 3 partner NGOs including Sheba Manob Kollan Kendro (SMKK) in Morelganj and 3 others including Chorkhola Social Development (CSD) in Patuakhali.

MABFO Teams in Morelganj and Patuakhali are distributing today (Nov 19) food items to 1,000 families in the unions of Doibhoddohati, Hoglabunia and Boloibunia and 800 families in Kolapara/Khepupara, respectively. The food items include 2kg of rice, 1 kg pulse, salt, candles and match boxes.

As Pirojpur has also been badly affected, MABFO decided to open another centre there covering Bhandaria and Mothbaria thanas. The team at Pirojpur will start work from today.

To further strengthen our teams in these 3 areas, additional 30 staff in Bagerhat, 10 each in Patuakhali and Pirojpur are being sent to the affected areas. These staff have been deputised from MABFO Microcredit Program. In Bagerhat a 5-member WATSAN Team has been formed with Br. Mannan as the coordinator. This team will undertake surveys, assess water and sanitation needs and sink and install tube wells and sanitary latrines where needed.

MABFO initially put a sum of Tk. 700,000 for this operation; Tk. 300,000 for Morelganj, Tk. 200,000 for Patuakhali and Tk. 200,000 for Pirojpur. With funding assurances from Muslim Aid-UK, MABFO has decided to transmit another Tk. 2,000,000 for Bagerhat and Tk. 1,000,000 each for Patuakhali and Pirojpur.

The body count continues to rise and is feared to reach, as per Red Crescent, 10,000. The immediate and urgent needs are, in addition to food items and drinking water, housing and shelter and repair and rebuilding of community structures like schools.

ECHO-USA has provided US$ 8,000 for relief operations. Muslim Aid Australia has informed us this morning that they have approved Aus$ 10,000.

FIMA UPDATES 71
Dear Brothers and Sisters

Assalamu Alaikum

I hope and pray that you are all healthy and prosperous in the conduct of your respective professions. We were recently called upon to relieve the plight and suffering of the millions affected by the seasonal floods in Southern Asia (Bangladesh and India) and Africa (Sudan). We salute and thank all those who have responded or are preparing to respond. Your actions and prayers will not pass unnoticed and will be rewarded in abundance, Insha'Allah. In the same breath, let us not forget our 2 "orphans" Palestine and Iraq who require ongoing support and collaboration. I humbly request that the brothers in Scientific Medical Association (SMA Jerusalem/Palestine) and IMA Iraq provide us with detailed reports of the current status in their territories and their humanitarian and medical needs to formulate a more effective and appropriate response.

Peru was recently affected by an earthquake, their worst in 30 years, killing over 600 with more than 1500 injured and thousands more homeless. The infrastructure, including hospitals, were either destroyed or severely disrupted in at least 3 cities i.e. Chincha, Cunete and Pisco. The International Community has responded with emergency medical and humanitarian aid but much more is needed in both the short-term and longer term and rehabilitation of the region. Without an immediate partner in the region, FIMA must rely on Islamic Medicl Association North America to keep us informed of the developments and needs of this South American state. Our prayers and well-wishes are extended to the affected families in these provinces of Peru. May Allah (SWT) ease their pain and suffering with expeditious relief and support from participating Relief Agencies.

We are now beset with another humanitarian crisis that has been unfolding since the start of civil war in the 1990s. Somalia has been gripped by a vicious civil war fuelled by the West and Ethiopia as its ally. The worst affected are usually the helpless and innocent citizens who have abandoned their homes and caught in the wild without basic shelter, nutrition, clean drinking water, health and clothing. The population is severely affected by malnutrition and its associated diseases affecting mostly women and children. There has been an escalation in the violence with increasing casualties since March 2007 with many more added daily! Are we going to remain observers and witness to these atrocities without action or can we expand the initiatives of the pioneers in Darfur with similar campaigns. An organization called Somali Organization for Development and Humanitarian Aid (SODAHA), a non-governmental non-profit organization, has requested medical and humanitarian assistance in the region (www.sodaha.org). They have undertaken to facilitate the logistics of any aid in any form e.g. medical relief teams, medical supplies, humanitarian aid etc. They also guarantee the safe passage of any medical team visiting the region. We are indebted to our partners in the region to provide us with confirmation of these circumstances and to act as a conduit for the provision of aid to this region. We will receive updates from them as the program unfolds. For your information and response, please note the following banking details of the FIMA Relief Account (please indicate the destination of your contribution i.e. Palestine, Iraq, Floods, Somalia.

FIMA UPDATES 70
1. FIMA RELIEF : FLOODS IN AFRICA
Dear Brothers and Sisters

Assalamu Alaikum

We have successfully passed the first half of this blessed month of Ramadaan and continue to enjoy its numerous benefits as individuals, families and communities. However, not all of us are so fortunate to sit down with our families each evening to enjoy the delicious prepared meals or to gather in our mosques and share the Taraweeh prayers together. Africa has been devastated by deluges of torrential rain over the past few months causing havoc and destruction in the affected regions including Sudan, Chad, Uganda, Nigeria, Algeria, to name but a few of the many countries affected. The floods have killed many hundreds, left hundreds of thousands homeless and destroyed the infrastructure and essential services including health. Our previous communication on this issue warned of the spread of diseases in the aftermath of the flooding. Cholera and Malaria have already taken the lives of scores of people without shelter and sustenance.

Dear Brothers and Sisters, please spare a thought for those less fortunate than ourselves and donate generously to the FIMA Relief fund established to alleviate the suffering of those affected. We will accept any form of assistance: emergency relief supplies and equipment can be sent directly to the affected region using out network of IMA's, cash can be deposited into the FIMA Relief account (details below). All forms of contributions are welcomed i.e. Zakaah, Lillah, Fitrah and Sadakah.

Shukran for your generous contributions and support.

FIMA UPDATES 69

1) Introduction

From 26th to 30th of July 2007, we were occupied. In that recent past, we spaced our brain to store stacks of pleasant memories grasped in Lido, Bogor , Indonesia . The name of the programme was coined 9 years ago and since then it has been reappearing annually. The 9th FIMA International CAMP for MEDICAL STUDENTS this year came with the theme, ‘Excellence Promotion for Skilful Medical Students’. With effortful initiative and unsurpassable teamwork between 4 parties c*FIMA, IMAKSA, WAMY and IIMA-, the camp was finally realized (as the venue had been changed at short notice from Istanbul to Bogor , and this requires a huge amount of works!). A big thank you-note to Allah, as the participation was free of charge.

Modern peasantries, Al-Kahfi and Al-Azhar sheltered us throughout the camp. Apart from us, around 150 participants from Saudi Arabia , Indonesia , Sudan , Turkey and Palestine shared in this camp. This comprehensive program covered educational, cultural, social, sport, tourist and recreational activities. Meanwhile, the operations follow closely the scouting camp system. Pertaining to the direction of the programme, it is pertinent to reference the ‘brochure’.

"The core program of this camp focused on the skills of the ideal Muslim medical students in virtually all aspects of personality development. It attempts to boost the development of essential skills expected to be prominent features of the contemporary Muslim medical student. It helps in directing the students of medicine to be effective participants in the development of their Muslim nation and the world in general. The program format includes a series of brief talks followed by group workshops on the selected topics with an emphasis on discussions, debates and active interaction among participants. The teaching and learning is facilitated by eminent local and international speakers.

So the thrill began…

2) Cultural programme

Each morning of the day’s event were filled with the cultural programme; consisting of a series of lectures, discussions and **presentations. The topic of the lectures ranged from many fields and interests however they are still in line with the theme of the camp. In the hope of equipping participants with skills and knowledge that will help them in attaining excellence in both academic and life, Prof Hassan Bella, Dr Riyadh Abu Sulaiman and Dr Salih al Ansari were invited to enlighten us.

Below is the summary of the cultural programme.

DAY 1

CHANGE

By: Prof. Hassan Bella

This particular talk speaks mostly about the need for change in the Muslim world and the concept of change in Islam which is different from the west. Change must voluntarily come from within an individual and Allah will insyaAllah help along the way.

‘We have to keep up or we will be left out’

ACQUIRING SKILLS

By: Dr Salih al Ansari (president IMAKSA)

This is another interesting talk in this camp which speaks about how to acquire a skill. The problem with Muslim nowadays is they do not do things to the best of their ability. Works are often not performed optimally because they do not posses the skills to ‘renew and refresh’, which is essential in keeping the motivation high. The presenter issued 15 ideas and steps on how to master a skill and excel in it.

‘Value of a person depends on the skills/ knowledge they master’

DAY 2

COMMUNICATION & ITS SKILLS

By: Prof Hassan Bella

Islam urges positive communication and our Prophet is the best communicator as there are evidences that he used purposely body language, spoke at the level of people’s minds and used to repeat 3 times until people understood.

The skills of effective communication are important for medical students as this is our main asset in our field in order to get patient’s trusts and attention. Prof Hassan Bella presents on the importance of communication, their objectives and ways of achieving effective communication especially verbal communication.

‘Hearing is by the eyes’

TIME MANAGEMENT & ORGANISATION

By: Dr Riyadh Abu Sulaiman (V. President of IMAKSA)

Quoting Dr Riyadh, ‘killing time is not just a crime; it is a murder because time is life’, makes me wonder on the importance of time and thus the skills on its management and organization. The gravity of Islamic perspective on time is very big as stated in al Quran and Hadeeth. For example, how Islam stresses on prayer time and that Allah had swore on time in Suratul-Asr.

‘Doing the right thing is more important than doing the things right’

DAY 3

TIPS & TRICKS FOR MEDICL PROFESSIONALS

By Dr Riyadh Abu Sulaiman

This is a short interactive talk on computers skills which was not only enjoyed by the students but also the doctors! Computer and electronic gadgets can be stressful for some people. However by knowing the right ways and some tricks, we can get the same results while being economical in terms of time and cost. Dr Riyadh gave a short talk on slide master, photography storing, duplicates, file transferring and others. The best thing is when he had prepared the actual slides for the tips therefore the participants did not only grasp the ideas but also know how to do it!

SUCCESFUL PRESENTATIONS

By: Prof Hassan Bella

Prof Hassan Bella provided the participants with the principles of A successful presentation. It is vital that the presenter has concern on both, his appearance and the content of the presentations. An effective presentation will be a 2-way and interactive session.

‘If I hear it, I forget it,

If I see it, I remember it,

If I do it, I know it’.

DAY 4

LEADERSHIP AND TEAMWORK SKILLS

By: Dr Salih Al Ansari

It’s the 4th day and the participants are already exhausted with 3-full days of lectures and outdoor activities. Therefore, Dr Salih tries to deliver his speech in the simplest and quickest way. He got the participants to divide themselves into 4 groups and discuss among the group members on whether the real agent of change is the leader or the community. The philosophy behind this activity is not the resolution of our discussion but it is a medium for him to find true leaders among the participants. This is because, he does not assign any leaders for the groups, the participants must arrange themselves and a true leader among the group members will feel responsible to navigate the discussion.

‘A good leader is a good forecaster’

LIFE SKILLS

By: Dr Salih Al Ansari

Life skill is the ability, behaviour, or habit applied throughout life that enables one to cope with people and situations, and to achieve success. Life skills are divided into 3 groups which are social, intellectual and emotional. For example, the social skill needed in making friendship, intellectual skill in making decision and emotional skill in coping with loss. This particular skill is different from the other skills as it cannot be taught through lectures and group discussion but one has to face something in real life and learn from it.

3) Complementary programme

As for any camp in the heart of nature, one would look forward to mingle with nature and get our hands and boots dirty. We kick started our outdoor activities with trekking across the hills of Bogor . The picturesque adventure had us climbing up hills, leaping over streams, tripping over rocks, gaping in awe (especially the Arabs who have deserts as their field trips back home) at breathtaking views of mountains, running across agricultural fields, peeking into chicken huts, chasing farm lorries, and stopping to play with the local children and chat with the local elderly. This gave us a great introduction to the beautiful ‘rain city’ of Indonesia , where agriculture was at its best.

For the next few days, our afternoons were packed with outbound activities, which are outdoor activities designed to teach us the reality of teamwork, trust and loyalty. Each group activity was tailored to teach us a life lesson and somehow measured the extent of our unity as a group and leadership. There were no specific learning outcomes; each group’s learning experience was unique. After warming up our stiff unused muscles and preparing our worried minds for the highlight of our outbound, we managed to throw away our fears and fly fox our way down the slope which indeed was an exhilarating experience. With that task accomplished, each of us went back proudly to our dormitories carrying in our hearts the belief that any challenge is possible, with faith.

Being compassionate doctors in the making, we valued the chance to serve the local community with any little medical knowledge we had. The community service program aimed to educate the local school kids about anaemia, including subtopics of nutrition, iron deficiency, altitude effects, and intestinal parasites. The session was packed with fun learning interactive activities such as sing-along, quizzes with presents and bombarding questions from the inquisitive kids. We gathered their weight and height to calculate their BMI, along with relevant details in aid of a research on altitude and anaemia. Serum haemoglobin measurements, which were initially proposed, had to be cancelled due to hygienic purposes. The day was wrapped up with an informal friendly basketball match with the kids, who proved that boy; we have truly aged through the years.

4) Cultural performance

On the boy’s side, cultural performance enlivened each night, even passing the time’s boundary engraved by closing ceremony. The four groups (Ashbilia,Cordova,Tolaitelah,..ooh I forgot) were led by four leaders, and assisted by eight sub-leaders. Accumulated creativity from five countries, amounted to unique, colourful and interactive performances ranging from sketches, songs/nasheeds/anthems, and games and were delivered in the pentad of language. The nights witnessed the richness of Arabic people with their numerous songs i.e. ghuraba’ (far relatives) and ***kurubu’ (keropok), the Sudanese who loyally wore their own tradition outfits, the Turkish with their good pronunciation of Malay words, and the Indonesian with their hilarious jokes and Achehian dance. That very night also visibly brought joy to a Palestinian participant, made me realized that we can find happiness even in the darkest time.

Separately held, the cultural night for female participants was filled with various songs sung by Indonesian participants according to their ethnicity which are Java, Sunda and Acheh. The Javanese girls sang songs i.e. ****Cublak-cublak suweng, Suwe ora Jamu, Jaranan, Perahu Layar and Rek ayo rek. The Sundanese danced ‘Jaipong’ dance to accompany Manuk Dadali and Bubuy Bulan songs. Another group representing Acheh, Sumatera sang the song "Kampuang nan jauh di mato". Consequently, Saudi Arabian girls promoted their unique custom of bride reception which includes singing and dancing. The vein of excitement swelled towards the end of the night as together, we performed a popular dance in Indonesia called ‘Ponco Ponco’ which often livens up particular celebrations.

5) Personal experience

Pushing the boundary; is the gist which I relished from this camp. The high expectation since the prelude of the programme was finally matched. I faced each day with accumulated modicum of ups and downs experiences and felt satisfaction at the paramount of it. Knowledge, leadership, brotherhood, teamwork, survival, creativity and issue of confidence flooded those days. Dr Musa Nordin’s one-day visit to deliver his talk solidified my contentment for the camp and refreshed my pride to be a Malaysian. Collapsed in exhaustion the minute I sat in the ‘Angkot’ seat to leave Bogor , I quietly regarded the camp as the best programme ever I have attended.

-Hilmi-

My first attendance to a FIMA camp has left me with nothing but fond memories. The instantaneous, effortless lifelong friendships formed with the Indonesians and Arab Saudis, regardless of language barriers and cultural differences were a treasure kept close to our hearts. It made me realize that physical factors aside, our hearts are about the same; all striving for the love of Allah, and that is what brings us close. The inspiring speakers stimulated me with a burning desire to strive towards excellence in the medical field, not only academically but in all aspects - as they say, a well rounded Muslim doctor. We are all imperfect servants on this fertile soil provided by Allah. Our personal talents are to be eventually discovered and nurtured for the benefit of humanity. -Yati-

The bond of sisterhood that I embraced in this is camp is priceless and cannot be compared with all the other experience put together. Networking is vital in our medical profession, so I hope I can still keep in touch with the sister’s from Saudi and Indonesia . The outdoor activities taught us survival skills and was a defining factor which bonded the sisters. I am proud to say that is the second time I attended a FIMA Student Camp and I would probably come again next year.

-Hajar-

6) Conclusion

As a whole, we recommend fellow medical and allied health students out there to experience the sensation of this annual camp, next year (2008). We purposely concealed our individual percentage of involvement in the camp in this semi-formal report as we perceive the next newcomers will enliven FIMA camp with their own creative way. Needless to say, spending money for attending beneficial event like this because of Allah is unquestionably a worthwhile experience. With His will, He will replace the money with something more valuable, as what He has promised in the Holy Quran.

And Allah knows best. Salam

OPENING CEREMONY
FIMA & HYATT FOUNDATION JOINT INTERNATIONAL SCIENTIFIC CONVENTION ON STD, HIV/AIDS & BIOETHICS
BALLROOM, TOPKAPI ERESIN BARCELO HOTEL
ISTANBUL

Assalamualaikum WBT and a very good evening

Distinguished guests, brothers & sisters.

On behalf of the Federation of Islamic Medical Associations ( FIMA ) I would like to welcome all the participants to our Joint International Scientific Convention on Sexually Transmitted Diseases, HIV / AIDS and Bioethics.

I would like to thank all our brothers & sisters in Turkey under the distinguished chairmanship of Prof. Ihsan Karaman for the excellent hosting and organization of this international convention.

In the past 2 days we had our 24th FIMA Council Meeting attended by representatives of Islamic Medical Associations (IMAs) from all over the world. FIMA has 32 country IMAs affliated to it with a representation of about 50,000 doctors.

And in the next two days, we would be deliberating on major issues related to the science and bioethics of STDs and HIV/AIDS in our Joint International Scientific Convention.

The quality of medical expertise within the FIMA fraternity and her close liaison with scholars of Islamic jurisprudence has enabled her to be at the cutting edge of medical bio-ethics as examined from the Islamic perspective. This has been deliberated in various of her international conventions and scribed in her Annual FIMA Year Books.

This joint international convention is another expression of our love and passion for medical knowledge and her examination and analysis from an Islamic perspective.

I hope you will all have an enlightening conference and would also take the opportunity to enjoy the historical sites in Turkey.

My sincere thanks to all members of IMAs who have traveled from far and wide to attend this annual FIMA convention.

I pray to Allah that He bestows your organisation the best of rewards and bless this international meeting of minds and hearts.

Postponement of Umrah Program

Dear Brothers in all IMAs

Assalamu Alaikum.

I would like to announce that the 6th Umrah Program for medical students that was supposed to be arranged during Summer this year 2007 has been postponed. This decision was taken in IMAKSA / WAMY after detailed discussion in the organizing committee. There were some obstacles and problems encountered in the previous programs. We postponed this announcement hoping that we can overcome these problems in due time. However, it seems that the solution needs further evaluation and more time. Therefore, we will work on this and we will try to find the best options in the nearest possible time. Please forgive us for the inconvenience and bear with us till further announcement.

Jazakum Allah Khaira.

4. MESSAGE FROM PAKISTAN
We have lost a sincere dedicated person who spent even the last days in the way of Allah. He came to Karachi to see his ailing mother. I talked to him and he was worried about frequent power failures in Karachi and the hot weather. I suggested and he agreed to buy a generator before he left Pakistan.

I also told him about the theft in PIMA offices. He was worried about FIMA’s record. I now fully understand that his work, friendship, anger was only to please HIM.

Allah bestow His mercy upon him and give him eternal peace in Jannah.

Prof. M.Tariq
Pst-President PIMA, Secretary FIMA

5. MESSAGE FROM PESHAWAR
Inna lillalhi wai nna ilahi rajioon.

DR. Azhar’S Death is a shock for all of us. I had a chance to talk to him for more than 30 minutes on phone and we discussed many thing about FIMA and primarily about CIMCO.

It would be consolation for his soul if we could put in more energy in CIMCO and change its shape from a "paper organization" to a living "body".

May Allah bless Dr. Azhar with all Rahmah and Fazal

Prof. Najib
Dean Peshawar Medical College

6. MESSAGE FROM PAST-PRESIDENT PIMA
Dr Musa

Assalamu alaikum

I called him on the 13th instant, while he was in Karachi, nursing his old mother, and we talked for an hour or so, his last conversation with me.

He was so ambitious about Medina Project and FIMA ventures. I asked him if he had a re-birth to fulfill such towering accomplishments and he laughed as if he knew the start of a new chapter of his unending life.

Who says that he was an old man? He never grew old, his spirit was young, his gestures were youthful, he was full of life and his heart was filled with Passion and Iman to its brim.

I had been his close friend for the last 15 years, I feel as if I am an orphan, so are my sisters PIMA and FIMA.

He was a beacon of hope, a source of inspiration, a guide to hold your hand, a torch bearer to let you pass through darkness and a great teacher to make you learn, he tried to give back everything he possessed and envisioned FIMA and all IMAs as the leading medical bodies in their own right.

He was a visionary leader who worked and strived for the cause of humanity and Islam.

May Allah SWT bless his soul in Jannah and grant us ability to follow his foot steps.

I know his family, his great wife and wonderful children, I also share these moments of grief with them from my heart and send them condolences.

Dr Tanveer Zubairi
Former President, PIMA.

FIMA UPDATES 46
1. TRAGIC NEWS OF DEATH OF PROF. EMERITUS MOHAMMAD AZHAR KHAN, PAST PRESIDENT FIMA
Date : 14th May 2007
Subject : Tragic News

Dear all
Assalamu Alaikum

Prof. Mohammad Azhar Khan has just passed away in Dubai Airport, en route from Pakistan to Jordan then to USA.

Inna Lillah Wa Inna Ilayhi Rajioun.

May Allah (SWT) bless his soul, accept his deeds in His path and for His cause.

Sincerely Yours
Aly A. Mishal

2. CONDOLENCES FROM FIMA Innalillahi wainna ilaihi rajiun

May Allah bless his soul and accept him amongst the Solihin

I had spent a good 1 week with him in Jeddah and Madinah just a week ago

My wife and I got to know him and his wife very closely during this period

it was a wonderful period, we spent meals together, walked to the mosque of the prophet and visited the proposed Madinah Knowledge Economic City and other historical sites together.

And we discussed openly our feelings about FIMA

He was very passionate about FIMA and the proposed Madinah KEC was yet another of his sole endeavour to strategise FIMA on the world map

To loose 2 stalwarts of FIMA within a short space of time is most painful for our fraternity

But we humbly accept this test with patience and preserverance

And more so to his beloved wife and children, we hope that Allah bestow them with sabr and acceptance of this destiny

Humbly yours,
Dr. Musa Mohd. Nordin
President, FIMA

3. CONDOLENCES FROM SAUDI ARABIA, DR. SALIM MALIK , Head Health Sector
Knowledge Base Sector, Saudi Arabian General Investment Authority (SAGIA)

Dear Friends

What a loss to the Muslim community

I am sad and filled with sorrow and sadness to let you know that Prof. Azhar Khan has passed away yesterday (14/5/2007)

He was on his way from Karachi to New York, and while waiting at the transit in Dubai airport, God peacefully took his soul to the Heavens, Inshallah.

May Allah cleanse all his sins and bury him with the companions of our prophet.

Prof. Azhar died peacefully. He performed Umrah and visited Madinah and spent a good time with his family,

This is can only happen to those who are close to our God.

May Allah bestow His mercy as he was one of those who fear Allah at every word he said and every work he had done.

I am quoting here a verse from Al Baqarah :

"But give glad tidings to those who believe and work righteousness, that their portion is Gardens, beneath which rivers flow. Every time they are fed with fruits there from, they say: "Why, this is what we were fed with before," for they are given things in similitude; and they have therein spouses purified; and they abide therein (forever)".

Inna Lellahe Wa Inna Elayhe Raje oon

In his last email he requested all of us to work diligently for the upcoming conference in Madinah in March 2007.

The last time I met him in my office, he had already worked it out in his mind.

For him, we should make sure that the conference of which he was appointed chairman, would be successful. And we all have to recognize his work and award him for his outstanding time and devotion to the Moslem society at large.

Dr. Salim al Malik

4. CONDOLENCES FROM MADINAH
Inna Lillahi Wa Inna IIayhi Rajioon,

I am speechless, in disbelief and so sad. Inna Lillahi Wa Inna IIayhi rajioon,

Having spent the week with Prof. Khan he really was an example to us all. May Allah forgive his sins, make his reckoning easy and enter him into Jannat Al Firdous. Ameen.

May Allah make this easy for his family. Ameen.

Hamza Marvin McQueen

Allah gives and Allah takes.

Shock, disbelief and untimely, how else you can explain his demise. His vision and his desires for Medina City led me to be involved with this project. On hours of phone conversations, he convinced me that this project was the first step to restore Medina?s legacy as a beacon of light not only for the Ummah but for the whole mankind in terms of knowledge and peace. He saw this project beyond brick and mortar which could take the Ummah into the 21st century. He was a visionary, a leader and great Islamic Worker who will be missed by all.

He trained his children well, worked and volunteered his life for the betterment of the Ummah and enlightened us all. In such a short time he became a brotherly and fatherly figure to all of us. May Allah give him a place in heaven and provide ?Sabr e Jameel? to his family.

Work must go on.

Dear All

Inna lilah wa inna elaihi ragioon

I was extremely saddened and shocked this morning when my seceratry Nasim told he just received on his mobile from Dubai airport officer the news of the passing away of our brother Dr. Azhar Khan. This is a sad moment for all who knew him. I met Dr. Azhar last week in Riyadh to follow up our Jeddah meetings and I have always been impressed with his dedication to the Madinah project and his willingness to work with us full time, helping us to realize our dreams to make Madinah again a beacon of Knowledge.

May Allah (SWT ) reward his intentions to be of service to the city that is beloved to Allah (SWT ). His departure is a great loss to all Muslims and his achievements in the creations and growth of FIMA will be Inshaa Allah rewarded by Allah ( SWT )in placing him in highest Ferdous in the Jannah.

We all have the duty to keep him in our prayers and doa and our commitment to continue the task that he passed on to all of us. The achievement of the goals he shared with all of us will inshaa Allah be rewarded with hasanat and raise his status in Jannah

May Allah ( SWT ) accept his good deeds and reward him by the generosity Allah promised to the faithful and forgive and absolve him of all stains of life that he encountered and reward all his lovers and family for their patience and acceptance for Allah faith.

ANNOUNCEMENT OF THE THIRD INTERNATIONAL MUSLIM

LEADERS’ CONSULTATION ON HIV/AIDS

AND

CALL FOR ABSTRACTS.

Background:
In the year 2000, a group of Muslim practitioners interested in using the Islamic approach to combat HIV/AIDS met in Durban South Africa during the International AIDS Conference on AIDS. They included representatives from the Islamic Medical Association of Uganda, Islamic Medical Association of South Africa and the Malaysian AIDS Council. It was noted that the experiences and culture of Muslim communities in the fight against AIDS were not being adequately catered for by current international AIDS conferences. It was agreed that International Muslim Leaders’ Consultations on AIDS should be held to share the experiences of Muslim communities and chart the way forward regarding the Islamic approach to combating AIDS. The 1st International Muslim Leaders Consultation on HIV/AIDS was held in Kampala, Uganda in 2001 and it was organized by the Islamic Medical Association of Uganda. The theme for the consultation was ~Strategies for strengthening and expanding the international Muslim community response to AIDS~. The consultation motto was ~Jihad on AIDS: Self discipline using Allah’s guidance~. During this consultation it was agreed that an international centre for promotion of the Islamic approach to HIV/AIDS be established in Uganda. The second International Muslim Leaders Consultation on AIDS was held in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, in 2003 and it was organized by the Malaysian AIDS Council in conjunction with the Malaysian Government. The theme was ~The Caring Ummah, transforming the response~. During this consultation, it was noted that there was a need to clarify the concept of the Islamic approach to HIV/AIDS and its implementation among the Muslim communities. In the process of building on these experiences, the Islamic Medical Association of Uganda in conjunction with the Ethiopian Islamic Affairs Supreme Council are organizing the third International Muslim Leaders Consultation on HIV/AIDS (3rd IMLC).

REPORT FROM MALAYSIA

EVENT : CONCERT & DINNER NIGHT "A DREAM TO END ALL WARS"
DATE : 7TH APRIL 2007
VENUE : CYBERJAYA UNIVERSITY COLLEGE OF MEDICAL SCIENCES (CUCMS)
ORGANISERS : CUCMS STUDENT COUNCIL

EVENT MISSION :
In a time so disrupted by political infightings and cross border aggressions, it is of paramount importance to inform the youths today that the belligerence leading to war can and should be avoided.

The seeds of war are sown by misunderstanding and so it should be our duty to help students identify what promotes belligerence and what pacifies it.

The CUCMS Dinner & Concert Night brought together all of the university’s student organizations to collaborate on a single event, intended to promote an anti-war message.

From the CUCMS Student Council, to the Student Chapter of the Islamic Medical Association Malaysia (IMAM-SC) and the Foundation (pre-med/pharmacy) Association.

A massive undertaking that will witness a first time ever cooperation between all of CUCMS student organizations.

THE PLOT :
It narrates the story of 3 different people, Ayman Basir, Ahmed Farouk & Natan Herschel, and how their lives are affected by the war around them. The story depicts the futility of hatred and how such bitter emotions are passed down generations. Violence, as the story unfolds, is an endless vicious cycle which only inflames further with every victim it claims. At the heart of the drama, viewers will see how much of a tragedy it is when the fuel that keeps the flames of warfare burning is hatred.

THE VERDICT :
An overwhelming thumbs up ! Great job.

1. REPORT FROM IMAM UK & EIRE EMERGENCY MEDICINE 2007
Assalamualaikum WBT
I would like to convey my gratitude and appreciation to all who attended Emergency Medicine 2007 (EM07), all who worked behind the scene of EM07 (including the cook and his team) and all speakers that enlightened us.

From the eye-opener speech by Dr Burhan, to non-stop laughter by Dr Heng Aik Cheng (plus his enthusiasm on Emergency Response Unit - come guys and gals join in this unit), to bonds of friendship through practicals and case scenarios.

Enlightenment on fiqh medicine and Islamic medical ethics by Prof Dr Abdul Latiff, which in Cyberjaya University College of Medical Sciences is conducted through PBL module (Problem Based Learning). Interesting isn't it learning fiqh of medicine in 12 complete PBL cases. Closing with a tearful and touching presentation (and I mean seriously crying ) by Dr Ang Swee Chai on her Palestine experience.

Dr Ang Swee Chai, "I refused to treat Israeli soldiers...till I got called by the Director of the hospital..."
Anyone would like to work for a year in Ahlu Bab Hospital? She can recommend you easily...

You have found the definition of humanitarian and relief work. You have been exposed to the frontiers of medical relief and acquired some skills in the practical sessions. And now be firm of what you're going to do with the knowledge and skills you've gained ...

Thank you all of you! You're the best!

2. FEEDBACK FROM A PARTICIPANT OF EM 2007
Assalamualaikum wbt,
Can't help it, my fingers are also itching to type some words about the brilliant weekend I had during the Extreme Medicine 2007 symposium (despite the avalanche of revision awaiting me ~5 weeks before finals!!!)

Congratulations to all the committee members and those who had chipped in to make it happen. I learnt a lot and really appreciate all the effort- really, it must have been quite (very?) difficult and stressful putting it all together. But its all worth it, don't you think?

May Allah repay all of you with the best of rewards, both in this world and the hereafter.

Looking forward to the next one!

FIMA UPDATES 35
Apart from the noise of the plane engines and the chattering of the stewardess, it was a quiet subuh up high in the heavens. All the other passengers were fast asleep and the ambience was just about right to reminisce on the past few days in the land where the Blue Nile meets the White Nile, a majestic view from the Khartoum Hilton.

I have always felt indebted to my Sudanese brothers from my early days in university in the United Kingdom. Now, that must be some 30 years ago.

Many of my Malaysian contemporaries would remember well the present Sudanese Minister of Interior, who was the representative of the President at the SIMA (Sudanese Islamic Medical Association) International Conference on Islam & Modern Medical Issues. He gave us our first tutorial on the purposes of the Shariah (Maqasid as-Shariah).

The past Minister of Foreign Affairs, Dr. Mustafa Osman, was the vice-president of FOSIS (Federation Of Students Islamic Societies) when I was inducted into the executive committee of this student movement which then was at the forefront of all Islamic student activities inside and outside the campuses.

My memory fails to recollect the name of the Sudanese brother in Cardiff who taught me how to make the muqaddimah in a majlis by first paying salutations to the prophet and reminding the audience of all the sacrifices Muhammad s.a.w. made to this ummah and that he had "ballagah risalah, waaddal amanah, wanasahal ummah, wa jihadifillah hi haqqa jihadih" (to testify that he has disseminated the message, passed on the amanah, advised the ummah and taught us the true form of jihad).

And everytime I am in the company of Prof. Malik Badri, our dear father from the Sudan, I am enriched and enlightened, given a perspective and insight into the Quran and the traditions of the prophet which truly mesmerizes me. May Allah reward him with good health and longevity to share his wisdom with this ummah.

It was therefore no secret of my desire to be with our brothers in SIMA. And not just because of a sense of duty being the president of FIMA (Federation of Islamic Medical Associations). I could never hope to rival the achievements of my immediate predecessor, Dr. Aly Mishal, who traveled afar to stamp the presence of FIMA world-wide.

And true to expectations, our Sudanese hosts were immaculate in their hospitality. Our arrival was greeted by Prof. Mamoun Homeida (President of SIMA) and Bro. Hasab ur-Rsoool (Executive Director of SIMA) at the airport tarmac. We were led to the VVIP lounge and our visas and immigration clearance were handled swiftly whilst we sipped at hot Sudanese coffee.

By the way, Bro. Hasab ur-Rasool was our mujahid brother who was detained by the Ethiopian forces in Mogadishu. Together with Prof. Hafeez ur-Rahman and other opthalmologists they had been to Mogadishu, undertaken 5 eye camps and performed 500 eye operations and blessed the Somalis with new found vision.

Whilst Prof. Hafeez ur-Rahman et al flew out of Mogadishu, being the excellent host he was, Bro. Hasab ur-Rasool stayed behind to clear the final logistics. The Ethiopian forces "invaded" Somalia, Bro. Hasab ur-Rasool missed the outgoing flight by 1 hour and was captured and accused of complicity with the Islamic court. He spent the next 21 days in prison. It took various letters from FIMA, SIMA, WHO and finally the office of the President of Sudan to finally secure his release. May Allah reward his sacrifices and brave deeds.

We even had an outrider to clear the traffic to enable our uninterrupted arrival at Khartoum Hilton. I cannot help feeling like a "head of state" making an official visit to the Sudan ! And for all of our travels in the streets of Khartoum, our 5-6 black BMWs, Mercedes was preceded by the same outrider. Our outrider policeman must have some variant of Ehlers Danhlos Syndrome, because he was so malleable and plastic, performing various manoeuvres on his "Harley Davidson" short of a full somersault ! It was indeed a sight to relish.

The four day conference was unequivocally a quatum leap for our SIMA brothers. Their excellence in the realm of medical and humanitarian relief, recognized at the national and international level, was now being paralleled by their brilliant leadership in the domain of Islamic bioethics. The scholars of jurisprudence and the Sudanese medical fraternity were requesting more of similar sessions to update them on these advancing biotechnologies. The former to enable them to issue contemporary and relevant fatwas and the latter to be informed of the cutting edge biomedicine.

These were indeed major achievements which FIMA is proud to be associated with. I think my sentiments were shared by the other 10 foreign speakers who invested their time and expertise in the 4 day deliberations.

But the highlight of my memories would be the exemplary character of the inheritors of SIMA. I had only just completed viewing "The Freedom Writers" which depicts the solitary crusade of a high school teacher to "nurture" the disadvantaged street kids who would otherwise fail to make it to college or even stay alive beyond 18 years of age. A must see.

The class of 203 in "The Freedom Writers" triggered me to reflect on the group of SIMA students who stuck to us like ants to sugar. The likes of Muhannad, who was my perpetual shadow like a personal bodyguard. Upon my departure on the 2nd April, he faithfully sat in the VVIP lounge with me and Prof. Abu Fadl Mohsein, Professor of Theology, Durban, South Africa. We had to virtually chase him home ! And Abu Baker made sure that my coffee cup was always filled and my lunch ready. Words fail to express my appreciation of these noble young souls of SIMA.

They were bustling with activity and enthusiasm around the Friendship Hall. They coordinated the transport, audio visual aids, ensured the flowing refreshments, printed the abstracts and power point presentations, ran errands, one student saw to the needs of each foreign speaker etc. Prior to my departure I had a full copy of all the power presentations, all the pictures taken and the lectures on line.

We had a great time with the students on our river Nile cruise and Dr. Sameer even slotted in a neurology tutorial ! Muhannad arranged for myself and Prof. Abu Fadl to visit the masjid and tomb of the Grand Mahdi. We learnt from the historical texts of his invaluable contribution to the preservation of the pristine teachings of Islam and their battles against the colonial British. A time for reflection to rejuvenate our roh of jihad.

A visit to Omdurman Islamic University, the oldest in the Sudan gave us the opportunity to speak to the medical undergraduates and infuse in them a sense of mission, medicine beyond borders and the lofty ideals of FIMA to gel the student fraternity world wide.

The culture of hard work, group dynamics and enthusiasm augurs well for the future of SIMA. They are getting hands on experience which would prepare them well for the arduous task of leadership which lies ahead. May Allah bless these young hearts and make them the equally brilliant leaders of SIMA in the future.

MESSAGE FROM FIMA ON THE OCCASION OF ISLAMIC MEDICAL ASSOCIATION OF SOUTH AFRICA'S ANNUAL CONVENTION
ISLAMIC MEDICAL ASSOCIATION OF SOUTH AFRICA CONVENTION 2007
HEALTH IN SOUTHERN AFRICA: LIFESTYLE, HIV/AIDS & TECHNOLOGY
Protea Stellenbosch, 6-8 April 2007

Assalamualaikum WBT

My dear brothers in the leadership and membership of IMASA.

My thanks to your ever resourceful FIMA representative, Dr. Ashraf, for requesting me to share a few of my thoughts on the occasion of your 27th Annual Convention. I have been on two separate occasions to South Africa. The first during IMASA’s hosting of the 2003 FIMA International Convention and in 2006 on the occasion of your 26th Convention in Pretoria.

You are continuing and enhancing the excellent traditions of your celebrated elders who had the vision and imagination to gestate FIMA in the early 1980s. I write from first hand experience that your representation in FIMA has been most vibrant and polished. The vocal presence of IMASA representatives in our Council meetings ensured that business gets done promptly and helps connect us with our history and mission.

It is therefore no surprise that IMASA features prominently in many of FIMA’s international collaborative efforts. One of our major achievements has been in the domain of humanitarian and medical relief. The presence of FIMA and her affiliates was immediate and impactful in the Pakistan earthquake, the Indonesian Tsunami, the Lebanon crisis and the acute on chronic Palestinian crisis among others. And this has been in no small measure attributed to the excellent coordination and networking that has its command station in Capetown !

IMASA’s pioneering efforts in addressing the HIV/AIDS pandemic from the Islamic perspective has set some enviable benchmarks for other IMAs to emulate. Your continuing reappraisal of your Jihad on HIV/AIDS, as this convention attempts to update, ensures that your efforts will always remain contemporary and at the cutting edge of the science and art of this dreaded disease.

Your various initiatives to "clone" the likes of the Ashrafs, the Khans, the Haruns, the Anwars, the Shabirs, the Yakubs etc would go a long way towards perpetuating the legacy of your works in IMASA. I was very delighted to speak to your enthusiastic medical students in Pretoria ( with the added benefit of shopping for African craft thrown in) and witness the strong presence of your younger residents.

FIMA students activities is another example of international collaboration at her best. Our Umrah & Ziarah programs, our summer and winter student camps has helped to gel our students world wide and endowed them a sense of mission and brotherhood/sisterhood beyond borders. I hope IMASA’s student chapter would be more actively involved in these programs.

Your annual convention would be an ideal occasion to celebrate these achievements which would heighten your confidence and passion to ascend greater heights. It is also a period of reflection and contemplation to search inwardly how much as individuals and an organization you have endeavoured to beseech the Pleasure of Allah through refinements of your human character and selfless service towards mankind.

I pray to Allah that He bestows your organisation the best of rewards and bless your annual meeting of minds and hearts.

Humbly yours,

Dr. Musa Mohd. Nordin

FIMA UPDATES 31
REPORT FROM KHARTOUM, SUDAN 30th MARCH 2007
INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE ON ISLAM AND MODERN MEDICAL ISSUES

The event was officiated by Dr. Zubair Basheer Taha, Minister of Interior and Representative of the President. The Friendship Hall, where most official and major conferences are held, with a capacity of about 1,500 people was virtually full. It was widely covered by the media. Below is the address delivered by the President of FIMA.

His Excellency Minister of Interior, Dr. Zubair Basheer Taha, Representative of the President, Honourable Ministers, Representatives of the WHO, President of the Sudanese Islamic Medical Association (SIMA) and his executive committee, Distinguished Speakers and Guests, Ladies and Gentlemen.

On behalf of FIMA, may I congratulate SIMA on the inauguration of this international conference on Islam and Modern Medical Issues. You have continued to uphold and enhance the excellent traditions of your predecessors in SIMA who had the vision and imagination to nurture FIMA in the early 1980s. The archives of FIMA records that it was a doctor from Sudan who was the first chairman of the FIMA Council in 1981. And in July 2007, we will be staging our 24th FIMA Council meeting in Istanbul, Turkey together with our annual FIMA Scientific Convention. May I take this opportunity to invite all of you to join us in Istanbul.

The past 2 years has witnessed a flurry of activities in the realm of humanitarian and medical relief, showcasing the excellent collaborative efforts between SIMA and other IMAs anchored by FIMA, the parent body.

The first FIMA Medical Mission to Sudan in September 2004, led by Dr. Aly Mishal, then president of FIMA, snowballed into a further 8 FIMA Eye Camps which up to May 2006 involved 58 opthalmologists from 8 countries. And over a period of 15 months, 55,671 patients were examined and 5,267 operations were performed. A permanent ophthalmic facility, the FIMA Eye Hospital was established in Al-Genaina and is a reflection of the excellent cooperation between SIMA, FIMA and the local government authorities.

Our FIMA SAVE VISION dream team, led by Prof. Hafeez ur-Rahman from Pakistan, has envisioned a further 15,000 eye surgeries in 2007 alone and have already begun eye camps in neighbouring Chad and Mogadishu in Somalia. And to ensure capacity building and sustainability of the many Eye projects, workshops have been organized for the training of opthalmologists and technicians and collaborations have been mooted with various international relief agencies including WHO.

This streak of collaborative humanitarian and medical relief has been similarly examplary in the Pakistan earthquake, the Indonesian Tsunami, the Lebanon crisis and the acute on chronic Palestinian crisis among others.

FIMA students activities are another example of international collaboration at her best. Our Umrah & Ziarah programs, our summer and winter student camps has helped to gel our students world wide and endowed them a sense of mission, brotherhood & sisterhood beyond borders. My initial 2 days in Khartoum has been surrounded by your enthusiastic and hard working medical students, which augurs well for the future of SIMA. And I hope the SIMA student chapter would be similarly actively involved in FIMA?s international student and medical resident programs.

The quality of medical expertise within the FIMA fraternity and her close liaison with scholars of Islamic jurisprudence has enabled her to be at the cutting edge of medical bio-ethics as examined from the Islamic perspective. This has been deliberated in many of her international conventions and scribed in her Annual FIMA Year Books.

SIMA's convention in the ensuing 4 days is very commendable and is another expression of the love and passion for medical knowledge and her appropriate utilization in this age of advancing medical bio-technology.

I pray to Allah that He bestows your organisation the best of rewards and bless this international meeting of minds and hearts.

Humbly yours
Dr. Musa Mohd. Nordin
President FIMA 2005-2007

FIMA UPDATES 30
REPORT FROM JORDAN ON PALESTINIAN RELIEF
I have attempted a summary of our humanitarian and medical work in the realm of Palestinian Relief over the past several months :

  1. A working medical group was established locally in Jordan. Participants are: FIMA, The Jordan Medical Association and The Jordan Private Hospitals Association.
We are trying to establish some integration and cooperation with local and international organizations, namely :
    • The Islamic International Council for Da’wa and Relief (IICDR).
    • The Jordan Hashemite Charitable Organization.
    • The Organization of Islamic Conference (OIC).
    • The Arab Medical Union.
    • WHO

  2. Up to date, we have received more than 900 Palestinian patients, referred from official Palestinian authorities. All were admitted to Private Jordanian hospitals with difficult and complicated major medical or surgical conditions that are impossible to be dealt with inside Palestine, due to the lack of qualified specialists and serious scarcity of medical equipments and supplies. Such conditions include major cardiovascular, neurosurgical, eye, cancer and violence-related injuries. We receive an average of 70 patients per month.
  3. The expenses of treatment so far have exceeded two million USD. Donations received so far are less than 200.000 USD. Prominent among our supporters are: Mercy Malaysia and Doctors Worldwide.
  4. The Jordan private hospitals granted significant cuts on the bills of medical care. Doctors were requested to waive their fees totally or partially. So far, Hospitals were kind enough to wait until donations are available to cover these medical expenses.
  5. Another area of action is the help of Palestinian new graduate doctors to acquire residency training outside Palestine. This activity is crucial to provide Palestinian institutions and communities with qualified doctors in various specialties.

Thank you for your continued interest to provide humanitarian medical help to impoverished Palestinian patients deprived of qualified care in their homeland. I agree with your kind suggestion to heighten efforts to shed light on their continuous sufferings, the cruel racial aggression against them, and the real need to provide expert medical care to alleviate their sufferings.

May Allah (SWT) bless all the dedicated people who have extended any form of humanitarian assistance and sincere Dua for the suffering of mankind in various regions in this troubled world.

Sincerely Yours
Dr. Aly Mishal MD, FACP
Chief of Staff
Islamic Hospital, Jordan
Past-President FIMA ( 2003-2005 )

FIMA UPDATES 20
1. LETTER FROM JORDAN

Dear Br. Dr. Intizar
Assalamu Alaikum

Two of our ophthalmologists have returned back after 3 weeks of ophthalmology training in Lahore, under the capable hands of yourself and your colleagues. We are waiting for the third ophthalmologist who was delegated from Palestine. The fourth one is from Sudan.

We can not express our heartfelt gratitude and thanks, because words are unable to do so. Suffice to quote here what one of our ophthalmologists wrote in the report he presented to us; ~In my whole life I have never encountered such a sincere warm reception and hospitality! I felt I am among people who do not work for this world, but for the hereafter! They have the sincere and dedicated spirit of our Deen, that most of us who read Qura’n in Arabic, fail to manifest! They are extremely hospitable to their guest, they fulfill what they say, they experience no fatigue, they share with others their wealth, experience and even homes, and they expect nothing in return, except the pleasure and blessing of their Creator .."

This is just one portion of the report!

I cannot add more, except to say that with this spirit and sincerity, our work will Insha Allah raise to levels that fulfill our aims in all aspects of life.

May Allah (SWT) bless you all.

Sincerely yours
Dr. Aly Mishal
Past President FIMA
Chief of Staff, Islamic Hospital Jordan

FIMA UPDATES 19
1. REPORT FROM SOMALIA

Kindest regards from Mogadishu-Somalia.

We arrived here on Monday, Dec 18,2006. Our team includes three ophthalmologists and one technician. We were warmly received by our local partners. Dr. Abdul Razzaq Dalmar is the only practicing eye surgeon in Mogadishu, serving Central and Southern Somalia.

He is a very energetic, learned and kind hearted person. He has established a small eye hospital (NUR EYE HOSPITAL) in Mogadishu in 2001, when he returned from UK after 12 years. Our camp is being held in this hospital.

Dr Dalmar has already booked cataract cases for us. So far we have performed 180 cataract surgeries with IOL implantation. We are working in shifts, so our Eye camp is working fifteen hours a day. We have plans to perform about 500 surgeries.

We also met Dr Fujji, Officer In Charge of WHO office to establish links and initiate collaboration.

I visited Benadaar University, established by Benadaar Foundation, a Non Profit organisation. This Foundation is formed by 16 local doctors for the revival of educational system in Somalia. Their medical college is in its fifth year. This is the only functional medical college in Central and Southern Somalia. Their mission qualifies them for the membership of our FIMA Consortium of Medical Colleges (CIMCO) for which they are very keen to join. They need a lot of support and encouragement. Dr Dalmar is one of the founding member of this Foundation. He is also the current president of Somalian Medical Association ( 250 doctors). They would like to apply for affliation with FIMA.

2. REPORT FROM CHAD
Two eye surgeons and one technician from Pakistan under the leadership of Dr Intzar Hussain have been in CHAD since Saturday, Dec 14, 2006. They have completed their assigned mission and are now getting ready to fly back to Pakistan. They have performed 255 cataract surgeries.

With best regards

3. LETTER FROM FIMA OFFICE
Alhamdulillah, the FIMA SAVE VISION campaign is working out very well in both Chad and Somalia, 2 nations most deserving of our medical assistance and encouragement.

Your excellent medical & humanitarian efforts benchmarks against the best and sets examples which are extremely difficult to emulate. Congratulations Prof. Hafeez and all our opthalmologists and allied health professionals involved in this most noble task.

We understand that political ad social circumstances in both countries are difficult and trying. May Allah protect all of you and shower His choicest blessings to your endeavours.

I agree with your suggestions that FIMA should consider and facilitate their request and applications for affiliation and tapping our resources in CIMCO.

I will share this welcome news from Chad and Somalia with all our IMAs in my regular FIMA updates. Kindly continue to feed us with more wonderful news of your medical and humanitarian relief adventures, in lands which few would ever contemplate relief work, let alone transit or visit. FIMA is very proud to have such noble souls in our midst who go the extra mile in the relief of human sufferings and you continue to remain an inspiration to many of us.

Yours sincerely,
Dr. Musa Mohd. Nordin
President FIMA 2005-07

FIMA UPDATES 18
1. FIMA SAVE VISION : From Darkness to Light

Somalia remained in civil war for 16 years which led this country to a state of massive destruction and poverty. Health facilities are in a miserable state and ophthalmic care is negligible. For 10.5 million population, only 6 qualified eye surgeons are available, out of which only 4 are actively performing surgeries. It is estimated that about 2% of the people are blind, more than 50% are due to cataracts.

FIMA and Arab Medical Union (AMU) representatives met in Cairo on November 22, 2006 to discuss the Save Vision Campaign in Somalia. WHO coordinator for Prevention Of Blindness (POB) in Somalia and the Director of MINHAL (Somalian N.G.O) were also present at this meeting.

After considering all aspects of the existing situation and requirements, FIMA and AMU agreed to work in Somalia as partners for Save Vision Project. Ten thousands surgeries are planned till 31 Dec 2007.

2. VISION PROJECT IN NIGER BY DOCTORS WORLD WIDE TURKEY
Doctors Worldwide Turkey, Hayat Foundation?s sister organization for international relief, sent 5 volunteers from Turkey to perform eye operations in Niger. With the help of some Turkish NGOs, 3 ophthalmic surgeon and 2 nurses went to Tesova, Niger last week. They brought operating microscope, generators and other equipment and performed the operations at Tesova State Hospital.

Team leader Dr Erhan Sarisin gave the following brief. "Tesova is in the middle of the country. Total population of Niger is 14.5 million but there are only 10 ophthalmic surgeons. Cataract is very common here and because of poverty and insufficient number of surgeons, people live in darkness even at a young age. Niger is a very poor country. When we operated we requested to see them the following day for a follow up. They stayed outside of the hospital overnight because they had nowhere to stay. We worked till late nights and operated more than 250 cataract patient in 5 days."

We are planning to start fistula operations for women suffering from fistula complications from childbirth which is very common in Niger.

FIMA UPDATES 14
1. Letter from The Student Chapter Scientific Medical Association, Jerusalem, Palestine ( SMA )

Dear Respected Brothers and Sisters in Islam;

We are writing this e-mail as the student chapter of the Scientific Medical Association (SMA), Jerusalem, Palestine; a member of the Federation of Islamic Medical Associations (FIMA). We would like to humbly introduce ourselves.

Ten years ago, with much difficulty, the first Palestinian medical school was established at Al-Quds University, Jerusalem. This medical school, currently, is the single Palestinian institution training undergraduates for the Palestinian community. The medical school accepts the top students nationwide. Each year a limited and small number of students are admitted in a highly competitive atmosphere. The school, in other words, embraces the brainpower of the country. Those thirty-some, carefully selected students could, if appropriately nurtured, effect a huge change in our community in different areas.

The school is trying its best to provide the highest levels of instruction and training; however, the Palestinian students remain at some disadvantage in terms of international recognition and post-graduate opportunities. Our students are highly motivated, ambitious, and eager to change, serve and develop. However, our situation here in Palestine is not an easy one. It is practically the norm to be struggling for the most trivial of rights and needs- daily, in our lives and academia. We are trying our best to reach out to other communities around the world to introduce ourselves globally, to explore, and to expand our future opportunities.

This work is being done by students. Only recently, a congregation long dreamt of finally became a reality; bursting with activity; agile and impatient to serve, connect, and inspire: The Scientific Medical Forum at SMA-FIMA! A congregation that brings all Palestinian medical students together where they can share ideas, grow, give out and address the world. We are proud to belong to the collective efforts of Muslims around the Globe.

This e-mail is only a starter, Insha-Allah. We look forward to hearing back from you to start exchanging ideas and prospects. May Allah help us serve each other in good for his sake!

1. NEWS FROM FIMA SAVE VISION
My trip to Sudan in this blessed month of Ramadhan was most fruitful. Two Eye camps were conducted in the province of Khartoum. This is the first of its kind at such a massive scale during this Holy Month. Five surgeons from Pakistan participated. We examined nearly 10,000 patients and operated well above 300 cases.

We finalized relief activities for Somalia. Mr Hasab o Rasool and I will visit Mogadishu in the next few days. The program will be finalized by our Sudanese brothers as they are in close contact with the Somalian authorities.

Prof Mamoun from Sudan IMA will be in Pakistan in November at the invitation of FIMA Save Vision. In addition to delivering various lectures & addresses he will sign an MOU with Peshawar Medical College.

A training workshop for the ophthalmologists will commence on 6th of Nov. Four ophthalmologists will participate. Dr. Intzar has finalized the arrangements.

4. FIMA SAVE VISION - OPTHALMOLOGY TRAINING IN PAKISTAN
Dear Dr. Aly Mishal,

Eid Mubarak.

I apologise for this delayed reply. I have been involved in the organization of 10 free eye camps planned for November 2006 in Pakistan and help with PIMA humanitarian relief in earth quake affected areas.

I will ensure the necessary documents are faxed to your kind self ASAP.

The opthalmology training programme for the doctors from Sudan and Jordan both phaco and oculoplasty will operate simultaneously as both facilities and the expertise are available in our department.

We will take these doctors away from Lahore to an eye camp for 2 days, where they will be able to perform surgeries.

We will also arrange programmes with other doctors, ophthalmologists, media and the business community in the evenings.

We look forward to their arrivals including Prof. Mamoon Humaida. President Sudan IMA (SIMA) on 17th Nov 2006.

We would also like to create awareness in Pakistan about the current situation in Palestine and Darfur. FIMA Save Vision welcomes other doctors to join these ophthalmology short courses.

May Allah accept all our efforts.
