Dear Brothers and Sisters

Assalamu Alaikum!

Ten days after a devastating earthquake hit Haiti, the following picture has emerged: at least 75000 people have been killed with other estimates suggesting 200 000. A further 200 000 people were injured in this catastrophe which also left 1 million homeless and a further 2 million people without food or income.

The capital Port-au-Prince and surrounding villages suffered severe damages and disruption of infrastructure especially electricity and water supplies. Food, water, medicine and shelter were desperately needed as displayed on the media throughout the world.

The Search and Rescue teams (50 from around the world) rescued 123 people from the ruins and rubble. With the hope of finding more trapped victims slowly dwindling, the focus has shifted to humanitarian relief and medical assistance.

Despite the numerous pledges of support, the conditions on the ground remain desperate with medical and disaster management teams struggling to cope with the demands.

FIMA responded to the disaster by sending a team from IMANA (IMA North America) under the expert leadership of Dr Ismail Mehr. They have performed sterling work and formed effective networks of collaboration with other organizations in facilitating the relief efforts. A 2nd team is currently in Haiti. PIMA (IMA of Pakistan) and their sister organization Al-Khidmat, will be sending a team of emergency specialists under the leadership of Dr Tanveer Zubairi into Haiti as well. Dr Yakub Essak (IMA South Africa) assisted the Gift of the Givers, a relief NGO in South Africa, with its medical and medicines requirement. They will be sending their second mission soon.

My dear brothers and sisters, it is not too late to assist the relief efforts of our partners in Haiti. You could assist their mission by contributing in 1 of the following ways:

  1. coordinating medical teams with the required skills to assist the existing medical missions: surgeons, orthopaedic surgeons, emergency physicians, paediatricians, obstetricians and gynaecologists etc
  2. contributing to the humanitarian and emergency aid by donating the following: shelter, clothing, non-perishable food, water, water-purification tablets, medicines and medical equipment
  3. adopting a project in the rehabilitation and reconstruction phase of the disaster e.g. a school, an orphanage, a hospital etc
  4. Cash contributions collected by your local IMA (code: Haiti) and forwarded to FIMA (banking details on website: www.fimaweb.net)

Humanitarian relief is our collective Amaanah and we must respond with due urgency and intent to save lives, alleviate pain and suffering and restoring hope of a brighter future. May you all be blessed for these noble efforts, Insha'Allah.

Jazakumallah Khairan Katheeran
