Dear Brothers and Sisters

Assalamu Alaikum!

Libya has been driven into a bloody battle bordering on civil war between the warring factions of ordinary civilians seeking freedom from oppression and corruption and the security forces of a callous dictator. Thousands are feared dead and many thousands more injured during these unrelenting skirmishes. Foreign migrant workers were the first to flee this territory with an estimated 210 000 crossing the Libyan borders into Egypt, Tunisia and Niger. Recent reports from our partners in IMANA and DWW have confirmed that the western borders are currently stable and well resourced to manage the fleeing refugees most of whom are repatriated immediately. There is no immediate need of any emergency aid to this region.

However, the eastern border is very different: Arab Medical Union (AMU) have been very busy in the region attending to the serious  injuries of the numerous casualties of these battles. They urgently require our support to fund the following urgent activities:

  • Sustaining the required number of medical staff for next 3-6 months:  50 - 60 doctors of different specialties and 300 nurses of different specialties
  • Providing a group of medical engineering technicians to fix any problems with the medical devices and equipment
  • Travelling of 15 medical consultants in different specialties for 1 week every 3 months
  • Providing the very urgent medical supplies and then providing the basic needs of medical supplies for all hospitals & the least urgent until the situation in the west is stabilized
  • The very urgent medical supplies would cost 150, 000 US dollars and the basic medical supplies would cost 300,000 US dollars
  • Providing the required food supplies for approximately 6 month
  • Providing the required psychological support
  • Medical Training of the Libyan doctors & supporting Libyan faculties of medicine

This situation could easily spill over onto the western region when the borders are opened or the security situation improves (Gaddafi’s forces are patrolling the border and preventing any Libyan national to leave the country). In fact, sources on these borders fear that the exodus may approach 1 million when the borders are released.

Dear Brothers and Sisters, our partners operating on the ground under extremely difficult and often hazardous conditions urgently needs our support. They have the personnel capacity to deal with the crisis but require financial assistance to sustain their relief operations in the region. Please open your hearts (and purses) to the innocent victims of this senseless carnage. Donate generously to facilitate their missions and bring relief to the pain and suffering of the injured and displaced families affected by this war.

n And if anyone saved a life, it would be as if he saved the life of the whole community.(Al-Ma’idah:32)

n Those who spend their wealth in the path of Allah by night and by day, secretly and openly, for them is their reward with their Sustainer. There is neither fear on them nor shall they grieve. (Al-Baqara:262)
